Would either of these be appropriate for someone that has a very minimal amount of Photoshop (or any other editing program) knowledge? I'm eager to learn and I have CS4 Extended.

Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks by Scott Kelby

The Adobe Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby

Thanks,

Jason

I have the adobe phtoshop CS3 For DIgital Photographers and have found it quite helpful. Its not a comprehensive guide to photoshop by any means, but it covers most of the techniques you want and some you didnt know you needed.

All the books noted are good in their own niche. Kelby has a "light touch for an easy read" but his style of dorky humor does turn a lot of people off. What he offers, though, is a lot of easy "how to" tips and tutorials that can be great for a beginner.

Martin Evening is not a "light read" -- he provides much more technical depth and is good for someone who wants to delve into really understanding the stuff.

I have books by both and have found value coming from both -- it doesn't hurt to have a variety of sources in your library.

My suggestion would be neither of those two books.

Instead take a look at either of the following:

These books are written for beginners but unlike most books that only tell you how to do a certain technique they all explain the "why."

Kelby for quick and dirty, Evening for the details.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

This book is more about achieving garish special effects with Photoshop, rather than learning the fundamentals of photo editing.

I like this Kelby book the best for learning and developing a sensible workflow. (Yes, I know it says CS3)

Not books but online tutorials. Many are free to view but offer some good information.

A second nod for this book. This will get you a firm grasp on CS4, and knowing how stuff works!

I'm a beginner with PS CS4 too, and I've been working through Martin Evening's book (linked to above) and think it's great; yes, it is in-depth, but beautifully structured to assist anybody from novice to professional.

I avoid Scott Kelby's books like the plague; I can't stand the man's purile attempts at humour and personality-cult approach to teaching; it's one thing making jokey anecdotes in a seminar, but not in a book, FFS! I get the feeling that he beleives there's something "hip" and "cool" (daddy-o) about the way he carries on, but he couldn't be more wrong. Have never understood why he gets recommended so often; probably coz he has so many books out there.

What Kelby does is he provides a "jump start" in post-processing techniques without getting into in-depth explanations. This is actually great for people getting started, but certainly isn't sufficient for "really learning" your software. The humor is another thing altogether.
