This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #247".
This is all about having fun so have at it!!
This round ends Monday, Jan 4th at 9:00pm EST

Birds seem to be popular so here's another one. This also has meaning to me because it was shot in warm sunny Fla, and I'm freezing my a$% off here in MA really wishing I was there. Also, as a special treat for the first B&A of 2010 (and because I think this shot has a lot of different crop possibilites) here's a link to the full sized original: http://ocron.zenfolio.com/img/v0/p170748771.jpg (external link)

Duplicated layer and did a +2 and +3 exposure layer. Then did a exposure fusion in Photomatix. Brought back into CS3 and removed a branch near the wingtip. Also did a merge with a darker original layer and burned in the background in certain areas. Then cropped out right because of strange green blurred area. Also removed noise with neat image.

Nice job everyone, this one is very hard to judge because they are all really good (and in some cases very similar). My top 3 are:

marcoj70 - Excellent HDR. I've tried HDR a few times and never came up with anything close to this good. Just watch out for the NR on birds feathers, it almost always smooths them out too much.

obnoxiousmom - great all around edit

palladium - another great edit, like o.m.'s, very true to what it actually looked like, and as a bonus you brought out the cattle egret (?) in the top left corner that I never noticed before.

And the winner is...Palladium!

Thanks for playing everyone.

I'd love to know how to get all that great detail Marco. I tried for over 2 hours and could never get even close to that. I have all the software you mention except Qtpfsgui. I don't know what that is. Is sthat where you get that great detail from?
I really preferred MarcoJ70, except for the slight loss of detail in the white wings. Just my opinion though :)
