Unfortunately, a search here has not been fruitful for me. We want to replace a rather old HP Deskjet 890C that is near the end of its useful life. It isn't feeding paper well, so would need a thorough overhaul. Ink cartridges (one black and one three-color) are becoming very hard to find and when we can find them they are extremely expensive.

I want a printer that will do a great job with photographs, though we don't print many photos now that we have a Costco down the street. Cindy (my wife), however, prints a lot of very fancy greeting cards that she makes on the computer. Thus, the printer has to handle heavier papers well.

8-1/2 x 11 paper is all we've run through our current printer, but capability of handling 11 x 17 would be a nice feature.

I would like to be able to make prints for sale at events like family reunions, etc. Thus, having a printer that makes decent archivable prints is definitely a consideration. I had thought about dye-sub printers some years ago, but it seems that those are history now.

I'd welcome any and all comments, folks. Many thanks in advance.

I really don't care about cost at this point. When I find a few suitable printers, then I will start comparing costs. I would probably be more concerned about cost of consumables than the printer itself. Right now, though, I am concerned about performance.

In that case, I can't argue with this...

Consider Epson because of the choice of papers and support. Any printer is going to have a learning curve. Getting a printed picture to look close to what you see on your monitor was a lot more difficult than what I thought it would be. Getting good printer profiles is very important, so a printer maker that offers a nice choice of paper will make it easier. Also, I wish I would have spent the extra $'s to get a monitor calibrator that allowed me more control over screen output.

There are some decent in-depth printer reviews on THIS SITE (external link). The forums have sections for each printer, and you can usually find good information about the running costs there.
