nwyman Cream of the Crop More info | Sonic72, I hope you don't mind (you have okay'd editing) - I had a go at lightening your first shot in CS3. I just added an adjustment layer and tinkered with the exposure.

Yours do look a little dark to me too. If you are seeing the lightened version as blown out, your monitor may need recalibrating.
