I noticed this morning as I looked through the viewfinder on my new 7D with 100-400 L IS, a texture covering the entire field of view.
A gentlemen who had the same set up as me had the same issue.
If you look through the viewfinder while looking in a house lightlight, blue sky etc. you will see a faint brown like texture covering the view in the viewfinder. When I looked through the VF in my 40D, no such texture.
Has anyone else noticed this and if this is normal for the 7D?

It is due to the fancy LCD overlay. In low light, it will look more grainy and such. It allows the customization with the 7D viewfinder.

Perfectly normal!

I wish they would have worked the virtual horizon into the viewfinder using the LCD - that would have been cool.

Yea, it's due to the electronic viewfinder as said above. Also helps you MF.

Virtual horizon? What is that?

I don't know if it is the same thing or not, but you can enable grid lines in the viewfinder to help level the scene, along with the level feature. I really like the full-time grid lines, help out quite a bit.

Are you talking about the electronic level? If so, it is in the viewfinder. You press the <MN-F> button and it uses the AF Points to indicate which way you are tilted.

It looks different, but you can get it in the viewfinder as well.
