Im wondering what workflow is anyone doing with vegas 9. What do you convert your video to in order to be able to edit it with vegas and what do you render it back to in order to have a high quality video.

Im asking because i dont have the strongest computer. Bought mine last year. A dell m1530 xps Intel core 2 duo, 2,2ghz, 3gb of ram, NViDIA Geforce 8600m gt 256mb.

You can convert/pre-render to an avi file.

Template 1080-60i YUV

Vegas will run alot smoother with an avi file as opposed to h.264

Thanks droz! With so many options i wasnt sure which one would be a good one. How about converting back for high quality HD video playback say online or on a tv?

your probably gonna want to render it to 2 different files..

The one for the web(vimeo or youtube) at a compressed setting (mpeg2 HD or Quicktime HD)

If you have a blue-ray burner.. you can render to a blue ray file and author it in DVD Architect that came with Vegas to watch on your TV.

If you have a memory card reader in your T.V. .. I think you can transfer back to your memory card and watch it that way. I've never done it. Your T.V. manual should specify which file types it can play.

I'm wondering about the different versions of Sony Vegas and what's appropriate for very basic editing of 7D video files. I've downloaded the demo of Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0 and started messing around with it. Looking at this list, I can't really see any features I need in the higher end versions of the software (at least for very basic editing / rendering tasks).

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiohd/compare (external link)

The only thing that the "Platinum" version offers that I guess I might use is some color correction options. I don't see myself using the software for DVD or Bluray burning as long as I can output compatible files that I could author DVDs (or Bluray) in other programs.

What version of Vegas are people here using? Does anyone know if the license allows an extra install (such as on a laptop)?

Thanks,
Steve

The main difference is the number of video tracks. I think you only get 4 with the non-pro versions.

If it's just a hobby, the movie studio is plenty! There is no reason to pay $600 extra for a couple features you'll never use.

I'll use up to 15 tracks for different angles, so I had to go with the pro-version.
The 5.1 surround sound mixer is a nice feature also... very easy to use.

*If you did need more tracks, you can always render 4 tracks to 1... and it would free up 3 more...etc

I render out to Sony AVC template (mpeg4) as it seems to give me less of a fuss when uploading on vimeo or Youtube. I rarely convert to avi upfront for smooth playback in Vegas prior to editing. Yeah it helps but typically I just work around it as it doesn't clip too bad on my PC.

The 7D codecs are very slow to edit, because Vegas doesn't support accelerated h.264 decoding (no editor does so far, in fact) and it's slower. A far better alternative imho, and the one that I now use, is to first re-encode in Cineform AVI which is a format that is much easier to edit.

More info here: http://www.cineform.com/neoscene/index.php (external link)

A further couple of points you might find useful. If using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (probably the same in the Pro version) is to always choose the correct template. For example, if the end result is to be burnt to a DVD then one of the correct DVD templates MUST be used (either for PAL or NTSC - whichever applies) - the application will then take care of the rest. Also, choose to have SAFE AREAS displayed in the preview window and use the Rotate/Crop tool to keep within the safe areas. Remember that DVD resolution is a lot lower than full HD and if you go outside of these safe areas your video, and if combined with still images, will be cropped unceremoniously. Finally, set the Preview quality to quarter size (especially important on a not too fast computer) as then the application will not be attempting to render a full quality preview just for playback purposes. It might look a bit jittery when previewed but the final output render will be just fine.

I also looked at Cineform as it is commonly referred on dvxuser and cinema5d. However I DL'd this https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=790269 when they offered the free limited DL and what little I did us the software it seemed to work fine re-encoding to HD AVI and then import in Vegas Pro 9. I did experience one audio sync issue o the first try or so but that could of been my fault while fooling around with the parameters for that output. It is cheaper than neoscene so it's something to at least consider if you're looking for programs to re-encode the original file prior to editing.

^^Update. I no longer use that software from the link.

Following something similar to how benesotor did his workflow thread (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=826550) I figured maybe pictures is easier for people that a bunch of text. So here is my 7D to Vegas workflow for 95% of my stuff. This isn't to say this is THE was of doing things. I'm just saying this is what works for me.

First off I transcode my files to a more editing friendly file format. I use a free software called MPEG Streamclip. You can download it here http://www.squared5.com/ (external link).

Open MPEG Streamclip...

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/mpegstreamclip1.jpg

Go to File/Open Files to choose you clip you'd like to transcode....

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/mpegstreamclip2.jpg

Once you've opened your file you are now ready to transcode. You can chose different files but I mainly use Export to AVI as it just works for me...

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/mpegstreamclip3.jpg

Once you've decided on a file format you want to TC down to you can chose numerous options for your final output....

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/mpegstreamclip4.jpg

You can also select various codecs for your compression....

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/mpegstreamclip5.jpg

Once the file finishes rendering from MPEG Streamclip then fire up Sony Vegas Pro 9...

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/sonyvegasp9intro.jpg

You should have a project file you set up for most of your videos. In my case mine is set to HDV 720 24p as that is what I render at. This is how my project file is setup....

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/sonyvegasp92.jpg

After I'm done editing I render out as Sony AVC which is MP4 file format. I typically leave it set to default and to use my project settings. There are several other formats you can choose from and settings that work best for you...

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/haknslash2003/Canon%207D/video%20workflow/sonyvegasp93.jpg

Hope that helps to at least get you started.
