One of the HS teams that I cover played a tourney consolation game in their auxiliary gym. I couldn't believe how dark it was when I walked in. There were 25 or so not-so-bright lights which barely made it light enough to even play a game. I stuck around and gave it a shot; here's what I ended up with using a 50D, 85mm f/1.8 at f/2.0, ISO 6400 and 1/640 sec for all the shots shown. Of course, there was a bit of Neat Image noise reduction thrown in during PP. The two shots below were taken from an elevated running track that goes around the perimeter of the gym, which made for some fun and different shooting (i.e. no zebra butts in my shots!).

The championship games were being played at the same time in the main gym, so I felt like a kid again at Thanksgiving and being relegated to the kids' table.

Wow, i'm about to buy a 50D and have read that 1600 and 3200 (sometimes) is usuable ISO but geez, this makes me happy. I'm going to have to look into the Neat as well. Does that work better than the photoshop or Digital Photo Professional noise reduction?

Great shots, I never would have guessed that the lighting was poor if you did not point it out.

I haven't tried the PS or DPP noise reduction, but I know it's MUCH better than Lightroom's NR. I can't wait for LR 3.0 to come out, it's supposed to have greatly improved noise reduction over 2.0. I'd really like to be able to do all of my PP in Lightroom and not have to use an external app for NR; it really slows down the workflow.

I used to have a 50D and shot ISO 3200 & 6400 all the time. I used Noise Ninja Pro and it worked really good. Whichever NR program you buy, just make sure to get the pro version. And yes, IMO, they work better than PS or DPP's NR.

I agree with duane; if you hadn't of said anything, I would never have known the lighting was that bad!

Noise Ninja and Neat Image are high ISO savers. I shoot at 3200 all the time for basketball....

here are a couple examples from this weekend...
