Friend was up late texting, so I grabbed my cam and caught this. I used a worthless mini-tripod that I have to hold with my hand to keep from tipping over because of my L lens and I also asked him to not move for the duration of the shutter...just thought I'd share.

Canon T1i, EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L
24mm | f/2.8 | 15.0s | ISO 800
Straight from the camera, No PP.

Comments? Tips (besides the obvious - I need a real tripod)?

Thanks!

Honestly, a picture is supposed to tell a story. I'm not sure what this one is telling me. Keep shooting, low light work is fun.

trouble is, no human can stay still enough for 15 seconds to be sharp...

doesn't do anything for me, but the shadow effect has some potential if you explore that further imo.

A little PP may have helped with sharpening and darks. PP then repost

Thanks for the comments everyone.

1. Yea, I asked him to stay "as still as possible" and it still looks fuzzy.

2. I used my pre-flash (is that what it's called?) to set the autofocus, with no flash on the shutter (obviously). When metered (entire room was pitch black except his phone light) I had to take the shutter to 15" to get the proper exposure. It was set on Evaluative metering....should I have used Spot metering in this scenario? Are there any tricks to getting away with a faster shutter & still getting good exposure in a completely dark room (I know your first answer will be to buy a 50mm f/1.4 - which is next on my list....so, besides that)

3. I haven't tried my hand at PP yet. I've read Lightroom is the way to go...any other suggestions?

I'm no pro yet and when I woke up to my friend texting with an alien shadow I was like "think I could take a pic of that???" - this was merely my attempt. I'm trying to shoot as much as possible, in all sorts of scenarios. When they don't come out as expected and/or I know they could be better I throw them up on this forum for advice. Not trying to get it into a magazine - yet. :)

Thanks -

I think I'd have had him move, on purpose. You're never going to be able to get him to stay still, even if he's asleep, the breathing will make him move.

I like the shadow work here, and you might have been able to take it to an extreme with his head moving, causing his face to blur, might have looked cool. Plus, he's not that interesting of a face to look at, so no loss there in the interest. (sorry no offense meant)

Trying upping your ISO, if you want to decrease your shutter time.

Thanks Todd -

So here's the shot that I took right before I told him to try to stay still:

When attempting to "create" motion, do you direct your subject to do a specific movement or just let it happen? To me this shot kind of looks like a mess since there is motion in many spots.

Also, should the movement be slow and fluid for the best effect, or 1 fast abrupt movement? I might go mess around with this here in a bit using myself as a subject to see what happens.

Haha...oh, and I'll tell my friend that he's "not much to look at" - he'll love that! hahaha!
