The local HS will be playing in the local college's armory next week. The ceiling is painted golden yellow and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with bouncing strobes off of yellow painted ceilings. The ceiling is the same color as the uniforms in the photo at the link below.

Anyone ever bounced off of a yellow/gold painted ceiling before? Any chance of getting my WB correct or should I just do my best to bounce off the white walls?

Well, I feel totally unqualified to answer you, having been shooting flash for about a month now, but I have found that really amazing color casts can be corrected in raw development... check out these, shot with bounced flash filtered through a green blanket...

WB as shot...

corrected in LR (you can see it could use a little more correction, but the tint slider's maxed out)...

I also recently shot in a room with a blue painted ceiling, and was able to correct the cast from that (though I didn't know I was going to be able to fix it at the time, so I mostly bounced off of the white walls). I haven't tried gold though - my guess is it might work out fine. Can you get in before the event and experiment? Also being a flash noob, I'm impressed you can bounce flash off of such a high ceiling with useful results (I've got a lot to learn about flash though).

That gives me some hope! I've bounced off of most colors of surfaces before, just not quite as extreme yellow as is in this gym. I'm sure I can get in there to test (with a speedlight at least), so I might have ot go that route to be sure.

So long as you can select something neutral with the WB dropper then you will be able to correct almost any colour cast in PS/LR.

I would be tempted to use something you know as white (grey can be off and give another cast), do a trial shot and either set a custom WB or batch correct the whole set in PP.

I have used this facility in PS to correct flash, old slides as well as ordinary WB issues

Yeah, I'm sure I'm over-thinking this. Thanks Neil!

Derek - you can always shoot a white/gray card when your strobes are firing/bouncing and do a custom WB on this frame. I've done this many times and it works great.

Will do. Do you use an actual white card or just shoot a sheet of paper?

Thanks Dennis.

Derek - I shoot a collapsible Lastolite Ezybalance White Balance card that I keep in my roller bag.

In a pinch (like what happened the other day at an NCAA hoops game, when I found I have accidentally left my Ezybalance at home) I've shot a plain piece of paper, which works OK.

Like always, be sure to shoot your WB reference with it in the same orientation as the players - in other words, vertical. Don't lay it on down flat the court. Shooting it vertical will allow it to reflect the color of the court (usually yellow) which will give you a much better WB. If you've ever wondered why you're using strobes and STILL getting basketball shots that look too yellow, this often is the reason - you're not accounting for the yellow reflections of the court.

Good point. I shot at a court that the box was painted orange a few weeks ago. Made for some orange shots at times.

Oh wow. I never thought about this. I always shoot my white paper with it laying flat on the floor. Great tip! Thanks.

I feel your pain with the yellow/gold ceiling. Last Friday, I shot at this place that had the combination of both a white ceiling and huge yellow beams:

Sometimes the light on a player was a consistent color so that the skin tones looked reasonable:

Other times, part of the subject was in white light and part in reflected yellow light. Look at the face and top of the head of this referee. Pretty hard to properly adjust light this screwy:

Yikes! At least this ceiling is completely yellow, so I shouldn't run into that problem. Those yellow beams are really distracting!

One issue I ran into this weekend was another gym with the box painted orange. I was getting some orange on the bottom side of players and nice color on thetop half of the faces. It wasn't nearly as severe as what you ran into there!
