I have 2 of my big three now strobed. First Wrestling, Now Ice Hockey ... Basketball will be tuesday.

Here are a few of my picks from Saturday's game between two of NJ's best public schools.

I did miss two outstanding glove saves. One was because the defenseman skated across and block the glove as the shutter snapped and the 2nd, a point-blank Glove robbery (maybe one the best glove saves I have seen in 10 years was OOF as I caught the cross bar with my focus) :(

I know many may comment on the harsh shadow. Ironically when I shoot without flash, I get a different shadow from the house lights. 6 one way, half dozen the other. I did have to jump to f4.0,as the 2.8 just seemed to soft, and my keep rate increased greatly. The 300 from the top row still cost me a bunch of action shots.

1) Puck deflected (see puck under MON on stick)

Good work Vin. Great venue to shoot in terms of being able to setup. Did you try bouncing the lights at all? I think the images look great but have a direct flash feel (and I'm not criticizing with that comment just suggesting you try other options as well and see what looks best to you).

Crit wise, I'd fix your horizons in all but #1. Well done with the lights man, I don't even know if I am going to shoot a single game this season so its nice to see the action.

Crit is always welcome. I really struggled with horizons all day, maybe it was the angle and my set up, maybe it was the cold. I noticed that on my processing and tried to crop most.

#1 was the best crop i could get while keeping the puck in natural site. I really did a poor job shooting that one, but got lucky.

I have bounced there, and would have used a third strobe at center ice, across rink. I would have bounced it off the ceiling and cut the directs to 50% BUT the local cable company was there with 3 cameras and an announcing crew. So There was not much room to maneuver around them. I left it out. (I was just happy they did not take over the booth ... you can see my strobes and my video camera in the booth above.)

I am shooting Hoops on Tuesday in a shoebox gym and I am seriously considering bouncing, just not sold on the best way.

Vinny.... those shots look good. Strobes when mounted on the side as you know are a headache as far as shadows and casts, but I would say that you did a great job with those. What strobes do you use?

Thank you. The shadows were very prominent as moved toward the blue line and center ice. As the shots moved toward the corners, I found I may have had an unintentional bounce.

I use two speedotrons Force 10's.
