Hey everyone my name is Ryan and I just got an XTI today. I got it used but I am very excited. It came with the 18-55 lens and I just had some general questions.

1. What are some good sources that I can read to learn how to go from auto to manual? this is my first dslr so I am defiantly a noob.
2. Has anyone tried any of these lens extensions?

Compared to what they are supposed to replace, they are garbage. Stay away and stay happy.

Hi Ryan, welcome to the forums and congrats to your great camera!

1. I recommend first playing with Tv and Av modes. There are only really 3 things you need to worry about: Shutter Speed, Aperture, and Iso. Av mode keeps aperture the same and auto adjusts other settings, the Tv mode keeps shutter speed the same and adjusts other settings. This might help ya. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=414088

2. Don't buy those, they are a waste. Learn to use the lens your camera came with.

Theses forums are full of info, I think you will learn a lot here. My only word of advice is don't get caught up in the equipment craze, you don't need the biggest, baddest, most expensive, most awesome stuff to take good pictures =)

Welcome to the forum. The best thing to do is start reading. As much as you can. Seriously.
Many people have recommended the book "Understanding Exposure" as a place to start. That will give you the understanding of the 3 parts of the triangle that will enable you to go confidently from green square mode to Av, Tv and M.

Don't start looking at lenses right now.. focus first on working with the lens you have. You'll soon learn about a LOT of lenses that people recommend around here. It all depends on what you want to photograph. Decide what type(s) of photography you want to focus on first before asking "What Lens should I buy".
The members of this forum love to help and give guidance; but we need to know what you're doing or want to do before we can help. The lenses you're referring to aren't going to give you the best Image Quality.

Research lenses and you will find some 'inexpensive' lenses with good Image Quality; but you're not going to get anything decent for < 150.

Words of truth. I think I lurked around this forum and read for a few hours a day for about a week before I wrote my first reply in these forums =P

I beg to differ. Both the Canon EF-S 18-55 IS and the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II are, at the very least, decent. They may not be "Pro" or "L" or "Amazing", but defiantly decent.

I started off by doing this....

Download Opanda EXIF viewer to your compooter
take shots in Green Box modes
Read the EXIF data and LEARN what setting the camera used to expose the photo.
SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT as much as you can... find your style.
venture off into Av and Tv land...

as said previously... Av is Apeture Priority... you can change the apeture and your Shutter Speeds will automatically change for you. Tv is Shutter Priority, you change your Shutter Speeds and your apeture will auto change for you.

Those 3 basic elements (ISO, Apeture, Shutter Speed) are so very important to understand its not even funny, w/o a good understanding of what they do, you'll never get what you are looking for.

Go through this thread and read up on what Ben wrote and what questions people ask and how they are directed into makeing changes.

Also remember to read about the Rule of Thirds...

Stay thirsty my friend....

welcome... shoot shoot shoot.

As for the "trinkets" on ebay... If you have a 20 that you want to part with buy the tele thing and play with it for a day or two. 99% chance that you'll never use it again after though

Canon "Snappy".... Thanks Mom and Dad!

Another way to learn is to get involved with a club whose members are willing to help you with your camera. Coincidentally, I just happen to know of one in San Diego...

Welcome to POTN Ryan. If you have $20 burning a hole in your pocket for camera stuff, best off to spend it on a Magic Lantern Guide for your XTi. It's a great resource for explaining what the features of your camera are and what it can do. It will be money much better spent then on converters.

Welcome Ryan
A common problem with first time DLR users is to think there is something wrong with the camera, when it's usually a beginners mistake. So be patient and ask questions that's how we learn.
