This is an interesting read and found it online check this out:

"Roger N. Clark added 7D data to his comprehensive body of pretty-much-to-the-core sensor performance analysis. Selected quotes from the conclusion:

  • Regarding low iso performance: "This means that for high signals, noise is dominated by photon statistics."
  • Regarding high iso performance: "Noise at low signal levels is very good, among the lowest cameras measured."
  • Regarding pixel pitch vs. photodiode / micronlens distance: "There is evidence that Canon has improved the fill factor as claimed in press reports, but on a pixel level, this is offset by the smaller pixel area."
You can find the whole article here:
http://www.clarkvision.com …ation-canon-7d/index.html (external link)
.. and a comparative study here (not yet including the 7D results):

This if for technically interested photographers."

Thanks for the heads-up on R. Clark's 7D data. I really appreciate his excellent statistical information, though it's a little unfortunate that he still hasn't corrected some of the errors in his analysis (e.g. dividing FWC at low ISO with read noise at high ISO, failing to account for spatial frequency, etc.).

You missed the first bit of the conclusions - "The data shown here for the Canon 7D shows that the camera is operating at near perfect levels for the sensor."

Yep, my feelings exactly. I is amazing to me that there are people in this world who can actually understand this stuff.

Brain, hurts....so what he is saying is that the 18MP crop sensor is operating as an 18MP crop sensor should...wow.

I think he's saying that this is close to being as good as it can possibly get for an 18MP sensor of that size. In other words, don't expect future 18MP APS-C sensors to significantly improve on the 7D's noise and dynamic range characteristics.

If that's what he's saying, I don't agree with it. Dynamic range is poor compared to other APS-C DSLRs thanks to fixed pattern noise, and read noise at all ISO settings is still higher than other cameras, and I would still expect future improvement if it wasn't.
