I have been taking photos for a while now and am getting more serious about it. I feel that I have photos that may be worthy of being published in magazines. I know Im not going to send them to National Geographic and get them published but maybe a smaller magazine. Anyone know any magazines that would be good to submit to? Thanks alot Matt

Get the book Photographer's Market. Comes out every year with a new edition. In it is listed just about every magazine, book publishing company, gallery, stock, etc., etc. company you can sell to. It's paperback and affordable.

I will second this suggestion!

I get it every year in case of any changes. It pays for it self in a hurry.

Hate to be the downer here but I looked at your website and not much I see is quite magazine worthy yet. You still have a ways to go for that. Not saying your stuff isn't good, but you still need better

Sssssshhhh!! dont tell the buyers!

Magazines are not the only thing in the book. There is everything from lil club newsletters to stock agencies. There is litteraly thousands of buyers listed. There is a buyer for just about anything in there.

Im guessing he means my blog as the OP does not have a site listed. It is not intended to be a commercial site, its personal stuff mainly for friends and family to keep up. Unfortuatley I dont keep it up very well. But it ends up being allong the same lines as how an auto body mans car is rusting out, The cops kid is in jail, preachers kid is a devil worshiper. Maids house looks like ground zero....

I'm not quite sure at which point of your previous posts you even said that you sell your images to magazines, is that an assumption? I know you said the book pays for itself but you never specifically said I sell to this or that magazine so who are we to judge when this thread is about where to find info on selling to mags, not to judge whether or not we think the photos on your blog are magazine worthy...

Just my two cents.

Is there any magazines for say amateurs that would take submissions? I want to get a feel for the best ways to submit them and learn what pictures they would be most likely to use? Thanks Matt

First, a location in your sig would be helpful.

Try small, regional magazines first. Whatever area you're in, google it for mags, find sites, read submission, editorial calendar, and mechanical requirement info. If not stated, and if they accept FL subs, email and ask for their normal payment schedule.

Get the hang, feel, and learn how to work with art directors, etc. then start reaching up the ladder

Do be aware of one thing, tho. I've shot for mags for years and I'm currently backing out of the sector. In the two minutes it took for you to read this post, another mag or two folded. Like newspapers, ad revs are way down and mags - even old ones - are folding. The world's 'a changing, and mags are disappearing.
