I have the 100-400 and just love it for airshows. IMHO the 70-200 wouldnt cut it for airshow duty.

The quality of the photos nicely surprised me and it can be very sharp, even wide open at 400mm (which is what I shoot at most of the time). 7D | 100mm macro f2.8L IS | 70-200mm f4L IS | 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS | Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 | Tamron 17-50mm f2.8

Despite the overlap in range they do suit quite different purposes and I wouldn't want to be without either one. The 70-200 is great for weddings, other indoor work and people shots. The 100-400 is there when you need greater length, such as for wildlife and motorsports.
If it's length you need the 100-400 starts you off from a much better place than the 70-200. If it's speed you need then clearly the 70-200 is the one to pick. If you want speed and length then it's going to cost; a lot; and you won't have the flexibility of a zoom.

Here is an example I've posted before, with a 100% crop. And here's a shot from earlier this week. This is a crop from the full image, but not 100%. I've been very impressed with this lens. I don't know how much the lens varies in sharpness, and whether I have a good one, but my belief is that those who don't like it haven't found out how best to use it. Mark.

Cheers, but we don't have them here; it's a redwing, like the American Robin a member of the thrush family, and a winter visitor to UK. Mark.
