I have the 100-400 and just love it for airshows. IMHO the 70-200 wouldnt cut it for airshow duty.

100 - 400 is great for me. My #1 lens for air shows and my #1 nature walking lens if I'm not taking a tripod.

70-200mm doesn't have enough reach for me (I'm not a fan of teleconverters). I love my 100-400mm. The quality of the photos nicely surprised me and it can be very sharp, even wide open at 400mm (which is what I shoot at most of the time).

Thanks so much everyone, specially for the pixel peeping samples.
What I'm planning on doing is to take shots for fish eating bugs. That's why initially I was leaning toward 1-4.
I've read a review comparing 7-2 with 2x tc vs 1-4 at 400 and the 2x tc could not catch up with 1-4. 70-200 has a midium telephoto zoom range (to me anyway) that is quite sweet for portrait shots. I was hoping for this lens to handle the wildlife part for me with a 1.4x tc.
Since I have the 100 macro for portrait for now, I just might go for 1-4 in the next month or two.
Thanks again every one and Happy New Year.

What a great thread, good info here. I am also looking at these two lenses at the moment for my 50D as well. I travel to Alaska quite often and I am leaning towards the 100-400.

Well I have both the lenses being discussed. Despite the overlap in range they do suit quite different purposes and I wouldn't want to be without either one. The 70-200 is great for weddings, other indoor work and people shots. The 100-400 is there when you need greater length, such as for wildlife and motorsports.

I do have a 1.4X teleconverter but I've never tried a 2X. From what I've read about 2X converters, at least when attached to zoom lenses, I don't think I'm missing anything. The only lens I use the 1.4X with is the 100-400, and only then when I need more than 400mm. The combination can deliver nice results, if handled well.

Here's a shot and 100% crop from my 50D + 100-400 + converter at 560mm, f/8 (wide open), 1/400, 100 ISO....

If it's length you need the 100-400 starts you off from a much better place than the 70-200. If it's speed you need then clearly the 70-200 is the one to pick. If you want speed and length then it's going to cost; a lot; and you won't have the flexibility of a zoom.

I haven't tried my 70-200 with a 1.4x TC, but between the 70-200 with a 2x TC I prefer my 100-400.

I did do a little test between the 100-400 and 70-200 with 2x TC and posted the photos on on flickr if anyone is interested: http://www.flickr.com …72157613803390565/detail/ (external link)

One time while shooting an event my 100-400 got fogged up inside from rain, so I put on the 70-200 with the 2x TC. I have to say the results were some better than expected, but still I think the 100-400 is better for over 200mm (at least with the actual lenses I own.)

I love my 100-400L on my 40D, and agree with others who've said that it can take some extra care to get the best from it, but that's only normal for these longer focal lengths. Here is an example I've posted before, with a 100% crop.

And here's a shot from earlier this week. This is a crop from the full image, but not 100%.

I've been very impressed with this lens. I don't know how much the lens varies in sharpness, and whether I have a good one, but my belief is that those who don't like it haven't found out how best to use it.

Mark.

Cheers, but we don't have them here; it's a redwing, like the American Robin a member of the thrush family, and a winter visitor to UK.

Thanks for the proper ID. Alas, I'm not as good at that as I should be...
