I was wondering how is the 580ex II's AF Assist compatibility with the 7D's 19 point AF? Does it work well with all 19 points or is it limited to 9 points?

I can't see why it would not.

I've done a quick test on my 7D with the 580 EX II and the AF pattern is very wide and covers the field of view on all my (indoor) tests. So for effective working distances I don't think it matters which AF point you use. It works just fine with all the points I tried.

Your mileage may vary.

I haven't tested anything other than putting them on the camera and seeing if they work, but my 7D works fine with 550EX, 580EX, 580EX II - I have all.

i thought the 580EX II was supposed to be compatible with the AF system on 1D cameras which has significantly more points then the 7D, so i can't see why it wouldn't be compatible.
The 430Ex though is supposedly not compatible with some AF systems

Just because a flash is compatible with a 1D-series camera (AF assist wise) does not necessarily imply that the same flash will be compatible(AF assist wise) with all EOS DSLR cameras. Case in point, the AF assist on the 550EX flash works with every AF point of the 1DmkII and the 1DmkIII. And I'm pretty sure that's true with all the other 1D-series cameras. However, the AF assist on the 550EX will not work on the 30D when the topmost or the bottommost AF point is selected on the 30D. The same applies for the 5DmkII. But with the 7D, AF assist of the 550EX works with any of the AF points, just like on the 1D cameras.

The outermost AF-points of the 7D are in the same location as the corresponding points in a 40D. It's just that the pattern is quite a bit more dense in the 7D.

They feel slightly further out.... but I haven't compared them.

I have both and they seem to work just fine.

I have compared. The additional ten points in the 7D fill out the empty space around the center point in the 40D, but there's no difference in "total coverage", or whatever we should call it.
