I have no problem handling my 70-200 2.8 IS on a full day of shooting (excellent work-out, by the way, and yes, please do hit the gym if it's tough to handle), but I do agree that it is heavy. Hand-holdable? Absolutely, but let's be honest, it's not a light lens by any means.

That said, I did hope they would have found a way to make the II version slightly lighter, if anything more so for ease of travel, especially by plane with all the airline regulations, than for shooting convenience. Well, it turns out it's a tiny bit heavier, but I'm sure that won't bother anyone who has handled the classic. It certainly won't bother me.

I hope the price won't be too outrageous. Obviously there is nothing wrong with my current 70-200, and I won't get the new one immediately, but probably will after a while.

Correction: this thread -should- be a 'discussion'.

A hundred posts of drivel such as 'that's too costly', 'the Nikon costs X', 'the old version used to cost X', 'I'm keeping my current lens', 'I'm not buying it', etc doesn't not constitute a discussion - it constitutes a extremely poor etiquette among many of our members.

Those of us who come here to learn and to get some facts get highly annoyed when we have to sift through hundreds of replies just to get basic information on a topic.

What information are you hoping for exactly - on the basis that this lens isn't yet owned by a single person here, and everyone is going on the same press releases?

The new one is slightly lighter than the mk1. 80grams lighter.

Hybrid IS only useful when you get close to the subject:
"shift-based shaking, which occurs when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene, is more pronounced in macro photography and other close-range shooting"
http://www.canon.com/news/2009/jul22e.html (external link)

At 1.2m/47"/3.9ft (the new and improved MFD on the 70-200/2.8L IS II), you are not close enough (to the subject) to need Hybrid IS.

.

Thanks for that. I had an idea what could be the reason, but wasn't shure.

According to the Canon site, the lens hood isn't included with the new lens :)

The Canon site is wrong.

what's the "better" about this mk2 over the classic? i love my classic.

Sharper, lighter, shorter MFD, IS, improved controls and weather sealing.

Did I miss anything?

Doubt it, the overseas price rises are simply a manifestation of a more consistent global price - of which Aus benefits.

I have actually been a little disappointed with it. I used to have the 4L IS and felt that it was a little bit sharper. I just hate to make a big upgrade and then find out only a few weeks later that the lens is being updated. Especially since the lens is 10 yrs old and I just happen to get it right before it was updated. I'm sure others can sympathize with this.

Not really. A 10-year old lens was always going to be updated sooner rather than later.

If you were going to get upset by something like this you were crazy for buying it in the first place - the rumours have been all over the internet.

I was never that thrilled about the old model. I know that will probably upset a number of folkes...sorry. It's big, sure...and heavy. It's an f2.8 tele zoom, so it's got a lot of glass to move about. It's AF was always impressive, and it's IQ from 70-150mm have always impressed me. But the relavtivley long MFD (compared to a 24-70/2.8) and it's poor IQ wide open at f2.8 always dissapointed me. Try a 200mm prime in comparision, the prime just blows it out of the water in every respect. So i sold mine and stuck to the primes.
Sure, I loose the convience of the zoom. But I put a 135L on one cam and a 200IIL on the other...it's fine.
So I won't be buying one, but then I wasn't in the market for one. I hope this lens really works out for those of you who really need one. On paper it looks like the best there currently is in this range.

Ok, Wife in California... Me in Korea... I think I am safe to charge it. Safe until my death when I enter the US again. ***Thinks to self, get credit card statements mailed here instead of home*** This gets better by the minute. I have 11 months to hide it all. Muahahahahahahaa <pinky in mouth>
