Surely this can't be right:

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is available from the end of February 2010 priced at £2,799.99 / €3,199.99 RRP inc. VAT

£2799!!!!!!!!

Canon RRPs are always way higher than the normal retail price. The RRP of the old 2.8 IS is £2380 but it sells for around £800 less than that. I'd guess that the new lens will start off at £2500 and pretty soon drop to less than £2000.

I know it's only just been announced and that there are now "trials" of it yet, but I still can't see myself paying more than £1500 for it.

Will have to get one from Yankeeland:D

Not really. A 10-year old lens was always going to be updated sooner rather than later.

If you were going to get upset by something like this you were crazy for buying it in the first place - the rumours have been all over the internet.

And there have been rumors all over the internet about the 100-400 getting an update, which hasn't happened. There are many other lens update rumors and I'm willing to bet that some of them won't be updated for years to come. I also just purchased the 400 5.6, which was released in 1993! By your rationale this lens should have been updated in 2003. I feel that the 400 5.6 doesn't need improving because it produces fantastic images. However, I felt that when I went from the 70-200 4 IS to the 2.8 IS a decrease in image quality was observable. I wouldn't have been as frustrated if I had purchased the 70-200 MK1 years ago and gotten some mileage out of it.

Now, you can get some use out of it too.
The lens didn't become worser than it was years ago.

I get your point, don't understand me wrong, but you all ready have a great lens, that makes very nice pictures, don't forget that.

I completely agree. However, I still have the option of returning it to B&H and getting the new MKII, therefore I am going to take advantage of it. I will be posting some pics asap! Which I guess will be sometime in February.

The new one is slightly lighter than the mk1. 80grams lighter.

Chris

Did I read the press release wrong? From Canon:

The enhanced magnesium alloy barrel design of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens features added strength with a minimal 20-gram increase in weight compared with the previous model (1490g vs. 1470g)

The folks at CanonRumors are not always right, but they were pretty on the ball about the 70-200/2.8L IS II -- already reached CR2 status on Novemver 12:
http://www.canonrumors.com …l-is-ii-announcement-cr2/ (external link)

On November 17, they correctly predicted the January release date:
http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/11/nothing-to-speak-of/ (external link)

Of course, they've done this before with rumours which did not come true, but I was sold when I saw the lens element map on December 6:
http://www.canonrumors.com …anon-lens-patents-review/ (external link)

I was watching the 70-200/2.8L IS rumours very closely because I was going to buy one for an upcoming wedding next week, but seeing all the evidence that a Mk II is on its way, I decided to rent instead.)

Anyway, I understand your frustration. When I bought my 100-400L back in October, the thought of it getting updated soon was definitely heavy on my mind. However, I needed it, and I had not heard any reliable rumours (an oxymoron, I know) yet, so I decided to pull the trigger. Now I have tons of great photos from my San Diego trip to show for it, even if one of the February 2010 announcements turns out to be a 100-400L II. One can always sit on the sideline and wait for a better lens/camera to be announced, but we are all here because we like to take photographs, and not only collecting gear, right?

P.S. What do I consider reliable rumours at this point?

No, but sensors have twice the megapixels and demand much more resolution.

In a way, you can say that the lens has become worse when looked at in comparison to what sensors can resolve.

That can be the next fun guessing game... I'm going with $2199

It sure looks like Canon is going the "well if Nikon can sell their lens for X amount of dollars, then we will too". I agree with TheHoff on the price. I think $2,199.00 sounds about right. But I never use the IS for my work because I need high shutter speeds. Looking back i should have purchased the non-IS version of this lens. But C'est La Vie!

I was very excited to hear the news. I won't be able to get the II for a while, but I rented a 70-200 recently and I loved it. Good to hear there are more options on the market now.

Just kind of skimmed this thread so I don't know if this has been covered but I am wondering what this will do to the used market for the current 70-200 2.8 IS and non-IS.

Today they are $1500 and $1100 (USD), used, respectively on Amazon.

Will that drop to $1200 and $800?

If so i could trade up from my 70-200 f/4 non-IS sooner than planned. :) New to the hobby so I don't know traditionally what happens with lens prices when new models come out.

i for one plan on upgrading - as soon as (1) copies are available and stocked on the shelves and (2) it is available at rebate.

The Mk1 has been a blessing when covering weddings and it's hard to fathom having all the features this lens provides in a higher quality package. Extra IQ, shorter focusing distance, better IS - if Canon's claims are accurate I'll pony up for the added value for sure!

My experience selling my Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR was that the value didn't move much in the time between announcement and shipping. I sold mine for $1500 right as the VR II started to ship. The volume on ebay went up and I think I might have sold my copy which was in very good shape for maybe $1600 before the VRII announcement, but I was surprised that the price didn't fall more - at least up until the time that I sold it. The price gap may have helped keep the price stable - folks were still getting a great lens for $1500 but they didn't want to / couldn't spend the $2399 for the new Nikon so there was still a market for the VR I.
