In an earlier post I think I guessed at $2999 (I original typed $2999-£3299) but wanted to be more specific.

It will be interesting to see what the RRP turns out to be in the States.

Did I read the press release wrong? From Canon:

According to warehouse express the mkI is 1570g
http://www.warehouseexpress.com …f2-8-l-is-usm-lens/p12847 (external link)

and the mkII is 1490
http://www.warehouseexpress.com …l-is-ii-usm-lens/p1518838 (external link)

It is possible that they have their specs wrong though

Chris

Still find it hard to believe Canon is bothering to replace a perfectly good lens instead of offering say IS to their 24-70. I wouldn't think of replacing my MK1. I use a MK1 for portraits and it's brutally sharp when matched with my 5DII. I've found I needed PS plugins just to tame the pair down.

Just kind of skimmed this thread so I don't know if this has been covered but I am wondering what this will do to the used market for the current 70-200 2.8 IS and non-IS.

Today they are $1500 and $1100 (USD), used, respectively on Amazon.

Will that drop to $1200 and $800?

If so i could trade up from my 70-200 f/4 non-IS sooner than planned. :) New to the hobby so I don't know traditionally what happens with lens prices when new models come out.

Prices should definitely drop, but the question is how much.

I wish I had sold my 2.8 IS when the price was a little higher. Too bad no one had money around the holiday season after all that Christmas shopping. :( At least I got $1450 out of it (before paypal fees..).

There was this website that kept track of lens prices over the years, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

I'd be careful about expecting price drops of the old version. I thought the same with the 24L but since the new version was so much more spendy, the Mark I held its value very well and has even GONE UP! I sold mine for $950 right before the Mark II was announced. Good luck finding one for that now.

As all the lenses have gone up in price lately, I don't expect much drop in the Mark I of the 70-200/2.8 IS. Some in the short run as people upgrade but unless the new one is so much significantly better, the old one should hold value well.

Couldn't agree more Hoff. Like someone said earlier "If you couldn't take a good picture with the MK1 then the MK2 won't help much"

1570 is probably a typo for 1470, as Canon is stating. I understand Canon makes errors on its product web pages as well, but as far as the press release goes, it would be pretty bad for it to be erronous. In any case, the product page for the original 70-200 2.8L IS does state 1470g, same as what the press release says.

In any case, whichever it is, I can't really complain. If the II is lighter, of course I'm happy! And is it's 20 grams heavier, not a significant difference. :)

Oh, don't worry. It's coming soon, real soon! Yes, I know we've all been saying that and wishing for it for years, but a revised 24-70 (likely with IS) looks solid for 2010.

Ah yes but I may be able to take a better bad picture.

honestly speaking this you got good money for your lenses ... about 5/6 months ago these were going for $1300 everywhere I looked ..

Now they market IMO is flooded for these and I'm not willing to pay more than $1300 (if I had the money) for this lens .. I really want the F/4 for $850 as that's my max ..

stupid replacing this lens .. many other lenses could of have benefited from IS instead of replacing a great lens ...

when Canon does something good we should applaud. On paper this is an improvement over the excellent current version. The price should stay the same.

I don't see why not. it's an improverment in their line-up: why more money?

I don't see why.

that said the 70-200 went over minor hidden adjustments over the years (the switches, the IS that used to lock-up the camera and lately a major improvement wide open. I had 3 units and I can tell the differences.

The 4 stops IS is good to have but honestly 3 were enough (for me). What I like is the MFD now at 1.2 instead of 1.4. As for the quality the mark I was already spectacular... better than spectacular? that sure makes me curious.

The switches look the same, I hope that they'll be tougher, and less "easy" to move by accident (I have a tape on it right now)

bottom line if they want more money then I'm not gonna like it.

Why wouldn't the price change? I'm sure they invested significant resources into the development of the upgraded lens. New optics and new IS don't seem like minor changes.

Has Canon ever launched a replacement lens at the same price point as the lens it replaced?

Has anyone in the history of capitalism brought some improvement to market at a lower price.....I'm 61 and I can't think of an exception.

If it is offered at 2300.00, our Mark1's will increase in value....:-)

Cars today last for 2-3 times what they did in the 1970's, accelerate 40% faster, have approx 0.1% the pollution, burn less fuel and cost about the same in inflation adjusted cost.
