when I was looking at 16-35's, I noticed a used MK1 is only like $300 cheaper than a brand new MKII. O hope this will hold for the 70-200 2.8 is

I knew that inflation adjusted cost thing would come up....The 70-200 has been out since 9/01/2001 so it might be argued that the new price is about the same adjusted for inflation....you'd have to assume disposable income has kept up with inflation.

word.

but forget shrugs. start deadlifting ... without wrist straps. that'll fix ya. :)

This man knows his stuff. Now, onto the lens.. the 70-200 2.8 IS is by far the most used, and optically best lens I own. I see absolutely no reason to upgrade it.

I know there is always room for improvement, but practically how much it will improve this lens I will have to wait and see. I am a little skeptical it will make much of a difference.

You should buy a new version I now while you still can.

If version II is going to be high priced the older 70-200's will be in very high demand and the price will reflect that. $1700 is not looking too bad right now.

I kind of doubt that. If Canon does not discontinue to Mark I, there's no reason for the demand to climb. If anything there will be a surplus of Mark I's, as new ones continue to enter the market while some existing owners switch to the Mark II.

On the other hand, if Canon does discontinue the Mark II, there will probably be a lot of pressure on Canon to lower the Mark II price, as the gap between the non-IS and the IS Mark II will probably be quite large. If Canon lowers the price of the Mark II significantly, the Mark I will become less attractive at its current price point.

So basically, I don't see demand for the Mark I increasing at all, unless Canon discontinues it and keeps the Mark II priced quite high. (Or if the Mark II is actually worse.)

This isn't the first time an L lens has a Mk II version released. You can look at previous releases of Mk II's to see what is going to happen. Generally the Mk II is a little more and the Mk I holds their value quite well.

Yep. I fully expect that the mk I will hold its value well. It is still, by almost all accounts, a great lens. I just don't expect that it's going to actually increase in price, except perhaps due to exchange rate fluctuations driving up all lens prices.

I am a doctor, after all. :D

Pulled the trigger on the current version today (well, I had work pull the trigger on it :p). I'm sure the new one will be great, too; but it's just not in the cards for me anytime soon.

Does this mean that my 70-200 f2.8 IS will not work anymore on my 5D. After all they have both been updated to Mark II.

As soon as anyone updates their camera firmware, the 70-200/2.8 Mk I will no longer be known. The cameras will use an "unsupported lens" message and switch to full manual - not the manual as in M on the mode selector. Anyone seen the manual aperture ring on the 70-200?

So everyone will just have to instantly switch to the Mk II while still possible. ;)

Sharper, lighter, shorter MFD, IS, improved controls and weather sealing.

Did I miss anything?

In what way is it better weather sealed than the Mk I?

All I have seen is that the buttons are less protruding, to make them harder to accidentaly switch.

I know I should be pissed because I just got the MKI (I guess) in October but I am not since I got mine for free so its all good. Free for a "obsolete" lens is still free. Right? Is free a good deal? Hahaha
