Imagine being a 17-55 owner (more $ and still hood-less)....
:D

(I have not been a fan of the bags Canon gives out for L lenses, but hoods are nice/useful.)

I WAS a 17-55 owner ;)

And the bag for my 100-400 is nice..The ones for the 24-105 and 200 prime i had were a bit garbage though

Sigma in my opinion gives the nicest most consistent kit with their lenses, Given most of them come with hoods, and most above $500 come with a case as well...a very nice well made case at that!

Yes, well ahead of Canon in that respect, certainly.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Too bad Sigma lenses' AF is not as consistent as Canon (and may never be, due to the limitation of reverse engineering), otherwise I'm sure more of us will be using Sigmas.

(Especially if they can put HSM and OS in MORE of their lenses.)

The light gray and red line of L lenses are nice, but sometimes I want a "boring black" lens to avoid drawing attention. (I will be very happy to pay 70-200/4L IS prices for a black 50-135/2.8 with IS/OS and USM/HSM -- with good IQ and consistent focusing, of course.)

I recently passed mine on, I was just too tired of the weight but the MKI is truly a wonderful lens. Having the MKII focus closer is a big plus.

What do I win when I turn out to be correct?

This lens will retail for $2499 at the least. Anyone want to place a wager? ;)

me

I still reckon that it will be nearer to $2999. So the wager.

If I am nearer you buy me a beer and vice versa - in person. Of course it will depend on whether you visit London or I visit New Yawk...

No, you're from the UK so you WANT it to retail at $2999 so the rest of us can pay too much like you do. :p

The current version performs very well, but it's the 200mm performance @ f2.8 that is the crunch.

Couldn't agree more. Sadly.

There isn't much to elaborate on really. It could be a bit sharper at 200mm and 2.8. At least my lens behaves like this. Perhaps it varies, it's the only 70-200 I've tried so I can't tell for sure. I tend to take most my photos at 200mm so that's why I'm hoping the mkII will be an improvement in that department.

Currently, all brands of 70-200/2.8 zoom lenses behave like this. Compared to the ef 200mm II L 2.8 prime (which is awsome at f2.8) only the 70-200/4 variants are sharp at 200mm wide open.
The 2.8 zooms a good and usable but they are no where as sweet as the f4 or prime.

If the Mk II of this lens improves things like the Mk II version of the 24 TS-E did people interested in this lens should be very happy with it. I hope Canon is able to do this for users.

I guess we'll find out when this lens rolls out onto our shop shelves. I'm sure it's going to be a stunning lens.
