yeah i had noticed that actually. Going to have to get the uv filter over the weekend. Cant have this glass being damaged

I've never used one on my 70-200 2.8 IS - I find the hood protects it sufficiently. The only lenses I use filters on are the 10-20 and 24-70 as they have quite shallow petal hoods so don't offer as much protection to the front element from knocks.

Love that seal shot - saw it on twitter in december, made me crack up!

Just need a quick opinion on this shot. Ignoring the massive blown highlight in the middle, what do you guys think on the colours? Does the lens flare work in this?

Cheers guys, i will submit it then. :)

What about this one? Having to play with custom white balances (i.e fiddling with teh sliders lol  ) as there are about 5 different coloured light sources going on.

Hi Rob

IMO the first one needs to be cropped across the top where the 'slab' of green meets the 'black' ~ why? Because the player is creating too much of a "leading line" i.e. the eye slips off him to the uninteresting blocks of colour at the top. Crop ut and see what you think, does it tighten the composition for you as well???

The second one is very nice, perhaps not original in look but it does give make the subject more dynamic and is the better of the two images overall.

HTH ;) :D

Edit ~ ref WB ~ was the guitar a pure white colour? If so a rough & ready correction i.e. does not always work, is try to set the white point using an area on the guitar, if it makes the overall WB look better then great but if not so be it

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Cheers L, i think you are right there.
Im usually reluctant to crop out of 3:2 (for keeping galleries looking neat) but that does look better without the top part.

Yeah, colour picking for the guitar sent everything else mental, so i had to play with the sliders for the best balance between whites on the guitar/shirt and the background colours

@ Victor - there's a thread here asking about accessing abandoned buildings: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=818603 Thought you might be the right person to answer her question! :D

id forgotten the 70-200mm f4 has a huge hood.

Sounds good, although I don't have Tuesday and Wednesday free :( I'd love to visit Folkestone as I never have.

I like it, Rob, nice image. I do agree that a tad needs cropping off of the top, but like you I just can't bring myself to ruin the aspect ratio so maybe some of the right needs to go with it which is a shame.

@ Anke, just a quickie. Things like Deal Castle, the Bandstand, Lifeboat House etc. I'm guessing I'd need some kind of property releases so sell those for anything but editorial yes? What if I got a shot of the sign that says "Welcome To Deal" with the castle behind, same thing? Signs I take it need no release?

Thinking I need to increase my number of photos as I've had a few zooms in the last few weeks but no buys.

Great question, I think you'd need a release if the private property was in any way recognisable in the background. I'd go editorial, you'll not sell it as easily but you'll be safe when you do.
Signs don't need releases, public ones at least ;)
