 It came free with my inspection today  Inside and out. Tyres were my biggest concern since my previous were pretty much bald. The guy in the second pic was pretty disgusted with my car for some reason.

Glad I read this. Was just about to put W7 onto a friends 2 year old Dell. Think I'll stick to Xp Pro, it'll make driver installs easier too.

Oh for God's sake! THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS 7 AND BATTERIES. You cannot base your whole life around one persons experience. If you did, there would be no computers left to use on the planet. Our CEO has a Macbook Pro. After 3 months the battery died and had to be replaced. So that rules out Mac too. So, what do we want to try next?

Sounds like it's just misreading the battery information.

Interesting theory - sounds familiar :)

As some of you may have guessed, I get a bit worked up when people make ill informed or out of context comments about things they do not fully understand. So before I totally lose my fruit on this one, can I just explain this issue to those who are now unnecessarily worried that Windows 7 will some how kill their batteries (Kathryn and Jon for starters).

Since it's launch, Microsoft have sold about 60 million copies of Windows 7 (http://www.businessinsider.com …hanks-to-windows-7-2010-1 (external link)). A few people on a forum have had a similar issue. So, who's judgement do you want to back, the 60 million or a few guys on a forum?

Windows 7 on a dell here and get 2 1/2 hrs out of each charge :)

Think about it logically. If windows controlled the charging how could you charge the pc with it switched off?

Hmm I've upset Jon. Sorry to wind ya up matey. :D

I started my original thread with a comment stating I'm not one for jumping on a bandwagon, however my experiences were the same as seen by 'several' people on MSDN.
Of course this doesn not effect everyone, but I'm certainly having issues, and I've only noticed it since my W7 install.
B636 I understand that modern laptop batteries have an eprom chip, which windows can access / modify. It contains things like battery capacity/charge level/model/manufacturer etc.

That is where the software could affect the full charge capacity of the battery. Some people have had this reding as low as 12% of the actual capacity.

If you then install a different OS on the laptop the Eprom still only allows the battery to charge to 12%

However this is just a handfull of people that are reporting this and not 7 million.

It amazes me how many people nowadays have laptops they they never use on battery, ie as desktop replacements.

Windows does not control the charging - it's the battery usage that it affects.

Sorry Jon, I can't take it, somebody's gotta tell them the truth.

Now as you all know electricity works by little gremlins crawling round the pipes and tubes of a circuit doing some work. Gremlins are fundamentally lazy buggers so to make them work the batteries on a computer are embbeded with a magical enchantment that makes the gremlins work. Now windows 7 has been revealed two have a few bugs that cause the enchantments to break down. Once broken the gremlins return to their normal behaviour of sitting around having a smoke. Which is why broken things, especially charger packs and batteries get very hot and sometimes release what we in the trade call "magic smoke".

I'm stunned. That sounds dangerous.
