Oh for God's sake! THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS 7 AND BATTERIES. You cannot base your whole life around one persons experience. If you did, there would be no computers left to use on the planet. Our CEO has a Macbook Pro. After 3 months the battery died and had to be replaced. So that rules out Mac too. So, what do we want to try next?

Thanks but I am fully aware that it won't kill the battery per say, what I am aware of are possible mis-readings which these 'isolated' cases could be. This is not my laptop, it is not the laptop of someone who has the first clue about how to do anything except browse facebook and load up their iTunes. I therefore do not want to install somethign on there that is going to make them panic, call me 4 times a day and generally cause more grief than it's worth because their batt warning is flashing.

I appreciate you are passionate but don't take me for a complete tool thanks ;) I have built more than my fair share of PC's and have a modicum of understanding about OS's and hardware :) (modicum may be an exagerration)

In other news today I bought an 85mm. Unfortunately the number at the end of the model is 8 not 2 :(

Sorry Jon, I can't take it, somebody's gotta tell them the truth.

Now as you all know electricity works by little gremlins crawling round the pipes and tubes of a circuit doing some work. Gremlins are fundamentally lazy buggers so to make them work the batteries on a computer are embbeded with a magical enchantment that makes the gremlins work. Now windows 7 has been revealed two have a few bugs that cause the enchantments to break down. Once broken the gremlins return to their normal behaviour of sitting around having a smoke. Which is why broken things, especially charger packs and batteries get very hot and sometimes release what we in the trade call "magic smoke".

And my camera's got painting pixies in it....

Indeed, the only reason for all the interchangable lenses is because those pixies have such bad eyesight. Odd the way genetics works, you can have great eyesight or a superb painting skills. It's like phone cameras they stick in a pixie with great eyesight to combat having to swap lenses but they can't draw for toffee.

I can't believe the fuss being made about Windows 7 on this (photographic) forum. Surely Jonathan knows what he's speaking of - he is, after all, the Global IT director for an international software company.

Erm...I am not saying that he doesn't. I think you have misread / misunderstood what I said.

The lazy gremlins are to blame for everything.

Right I'm probably going to really wind Jon up now.. this is not personal and no way aimed at you mate.

Our IT Director has absolutely no idea about individual 'technical' issues affecting our services. Our director is there more for strategic decisions and defining overal IT vision/Obvjectives. We have technical teams to ensure everything works and can achieve the service levels as defined.

If our director had his hands in every technical issue encuontered whilst testing a new piece of kit, he would have no time to 'Direct', and we could sack all the techies!

;)

We should have x factor style big 'X's that we can push when photos come out bad, and that pixie can get sacked.

My IT director was an accountant up until last August.
When I was ordering new laptops in December I got an offer booklet through with the delivery on ISP deal, upgrades etc etc. I asked if he was interested in changing ISP, he replies 'No, we've used Dells for the last few years and I like the screens.'
On a more positive note we're below spending budget :D

LMAO - there's some truth in that but not all directors fell into the job, a few of us worked our way up through the ranks :) You can work your way through strategy a whole lot faster if you actually understand what you are talking about ;)
