I was fantasizing about the 1D Mk IV in front of a friend of mine (who also owns a bunch of Canon gear), and he asked why anyone would buy a Mk IV instead of just getting a 7D instead. Weather-sealing aside (not an important consideration for either of us), he claimed the differences between them are so insignificant that anyone (like me!) would be crazy to spend the extra money for the Mk IV. I've read all the specs on the Mk IV but not on the 7D, and I'm wondering if anyone has done a side-by-side comparison that I could use to win my argument (that the differences are significant enough to warrant the additional expense). If this is old news and I missed it, apologies in advance. I've seen other body comparisons but don't remember seeing this one.

Why do you have a MkIII instead of a 50D? ;)

It looks like you don't even own a 7D. So why do you think its almost equal to the Mark IV? Some people buy the Mark IV just for the weather sealing. It is very important to me. I have to shoot whether it is raining or not. I am pretty sure that if I were shooting with my 7D it would eventually fail because of the weather. 10 frames a second is a lot better than 8 fps. Two slots for CF and SD make a huge difference for me. If one card fails at least the other one is still recording. If you have looked at samples of the Mark IV the high ISO even at 12800 look very usable and even higher. My 7D is great but the Mark IV and even the Mark III is a better professional camera.

Who even has a mkIV to do such a comparison? It's just barely started shipping, for crying out loud!

Anyway sdipirro, you own a 1D mkIII, going for the 7D in replacement will be a downgrading... but if it's to replace you 20D/10D it's an upgrade.

I just bought a used 1DMkIII (can't afford a MkIV). Paid slightly more for it than I would have paid for a new 7D. Why? Because the 1D-series cameras have some features that the xxD and xD cameras, including the 7D, don't have. Those features are deal-breakers for me: side-by-side technical comparisons mean little. Your friend may see the differences as insignificant but I don't.

No way they are the same! However I sure do like my 7D, feel like it almost gets up the a 1DMIII, but it don't overall.

Besides the 1D4 looks and feels more professional to me. But i should try 7D before pulling a trigger for 1D4.;)

It all comes down to: If you have to ask, then you probably don't need one.

For the majority of users, the 7D will do the trick. For the pros, the MK4 is the only tool worth considering.

It was a good move by Canon to put a feature set into an APS-C body that finally competed with Nikon's D300. Canon fans seem to be so grateful that they have abandoned reason.

The 7D is not even close to the equal of the 1D Mark III. Nobody has their hands on a 1D Mark IV yet, but I think we can be sure the differences will be even greater.

Not necessarily. :) For some pros, a 5DX or 1DsX would be the only tool worth considering, and for some the 7D would be sufficient. It all depends on the feature set needed to accomplish the job.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Sigh.... For the 11ty billionth time.. The weather sealing on the 7d is in no way, shape, form, or inkling the same as the sealing on the 1d series cameras. Snow is NOT impressive..it blows clean and or stays soft. If it had been soaked in a torrential downpour then yes maybe.. I've put my 1ds through that and it shrugged it off and kept on clicking. A 7d can NOT do that.

Why is he a moron because he thinks differently to you? Opinionated certainly, but anyone here must be used to that?

Certainly I think the 1D4 is a better camera by far, but everyones priorities are different. I believe the IDs4 will be a better camera than the 1D4. Does that make me a moron too?
