A few friends are trying to push me to Nikon. I know a few of you have both. Why both? What differences are there between them to you?

There is no autofocus Nikon 85mm f/1.2. End of story

(that's simplifying things quite a bit, but if that's a lens you want....)

But seriously, both systems have their strengths and weaknesses, and they are both excellent overall. Why are your friends trying to steer you towards a Nikon?

the 85 1.4 I'm told is just as good and it weighs half the weight LOL

the biggest difference is price...nikon costs more.

Then there's the prime difference...canon has better wide angle primes. Nikon's are almost non-existent in AF.

Then there's the zoom difference...nikon has better zooms. 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 (though this may be debatable after the new 70-200 is tested).

Nikon seems heavier...everywhere. That can be a drag after a long day's shoot.

Nikon's color renditions are preferable to me. As are the ergonomics. Though I do miss the wheel from canon, I love that I don't have to go menu diving for everything.

I love it that I can throw a grip on the D700 and get 8.5 fps on full frame. I also prefer the high ISO handling in nikon.

I miss the 70-200 F4IS from canon. It was my absolute favorite zoom ever.

That's the thing. Canon has the excellent 85/1.8 and 1.2, Nikon has the 1.8 and 1.4. Nikon has the 200-400 f/4 zoom, Canon doesn't have anything like it. Canon has the awesome 70-200mm f/4 IS. Nikon does not. Nikon has the awesome 14-24mm f/2.8, Canon does not. They do have a 16-35mm f/2.8 and 17-40 f/4 though.

As for bodies, you can NOT get a ~$2600 21MP full-frame body for Nikon (you have to pay ~$8K for the D3x). BUT you can get a ~$2600 12MP full-frame body WITH a much better autofocus system (the D700) Canon also has the 1.3 crop bodies (EOS-1 series)

So overall, there is no real clear winner.

no it's not. I owned both. The 85 1.4 is much faster focusing (we still have that) but the bokeh isn't as good as the 1.2. It's close but not the same. Someone who's owned both could tell. I actually prefer the nikon though, just because the focus is so much faster.

How do you rate the Nikon 85 1.4 to the Canon 85 1.8?

Would you say the D700 is better than a 5dm2?

Someone posted a link yesterday to a fashion photographer using a D300, that peaked my interest more.

When I went to shops to try both no one had both to try, I picked Canon cause I have had Canon's before

The 5DII and D700 are quite different in their overall capabilities.
5DII - 21megapixels, AMAZING image quality AND resolution. Takes L lenses  "Simple" autofocus sytem (9-points, more or less the same as the XXD series), only 3FPS

D700 - 12MP, AMAZING image quality, but only 12 MP. Does NOT take L lenses  MUCH more advanced autofocus system, more FPS.

As for a fashion photographer using a D300, I'm sure there are fashion photographers using all kinds of cameras. The lighting/skills/lenses would have much more of an impact on fashion photography than the body used. Sports photography, the body would be much more important though.

I switched from Pentax back in February 2008, and I took a serious look at both Canon and Nikon. I liked Canon's lens lineup much better so I bought the 40D.

IF someone handed me a D700+24-70+70-200 VR+SB900, I would be happy. All the gear out there is pretty good once you get to the high end.

I have friends who shoot Nikon and Canon, and I've never seen any of us try to (seriously) convert one another. We joke sometimes, but we all respect our camera choices :)

I rate the nikon better than the canon 85 1.8. It is sharp wide open and focuses just as fast.

I liked the D700 better than the 5D2. It (5d2) was my only choice before I switched. I'm just not as fond of the 5d2 color renditions and noise handling and there is no comparison as far as AF goes. The D700 is so far above the 5D2 it's amazing.. But I am more fond of the 5D2 mpx. I had the D300. It is a good camera. Not as good at noise handling as the D700 but better than the ds2. I don't compare it to the M3 because the M3 had more chroma noise that didn't clean up as well as the ds2 but it took longer to get to noisy than the ds2 did.

But this is why I have switched. It isn't cheap though.
