My wife and I like Canon because that is what we are used to. I think it's more what you are used to. Both have things to offer, but it comes down to the person using the camera more than how much you spend or what brand you choose.

you missed Breedlove.

I shoot with a D700 for portraits and normal shooting and a d5000 I use as my point and shoot when I don't want to risk damaging or loosing my D700.
I prefer the focusing on the Nikon DSLR's over Canon. I have a 7D with the 100-400mm mounted for wildlife. I still get quite a few OOF shots with the 7D and the 100-400,
but usually only when the lighting is bad.

Whats intresting is that i actually convinced my friend to stay nikon. He purchased a D300s at the same time i purchased a 7D. Difference was i paired my 7D with a 24-70 2.8 while he paired his nikon with a 18-200 3.5-5.6 vr lens. He saw the images i was producing indoors and was mistified he couldnt perform at the same low light level. He was on the verge of returning his d300s. Mind you he has shot slr for a lot longer than myself. I convinced him that he needed to change lenses. To go and get the 17-55 2.8 vr since thats his preffered focul length to begin with. Now he has tried it and is saving up for it, learning the D300s and liking it. Point is we choose brands for different reasons. For him the ergonomics of the D300s really fit his shooting style. While for me it came down to glass selection. The nikon prices scared me away from the beggining while i felt canon had a broader range to offer. Yes we could look at 3rd party but when looking at Canons L line i was sold.

New on this forum (hello everybody)

I just started my long-anticipated switch from Nikon to Canon...Got 5DII +24-70....I am not sure why but i like 5dii much better then d700...But it seems that everybody is switching from Canon to Nikon so i am very confused right now! Seems to me like everybody knows something i don't
I prefer Canon ergonomics, and COLORS! Colors are amazing! I mostly do kids, portraits etc and i am so sick of Nikon yellowish-bluish colors....I shoot mostly raw, but i can't spend all my time correcting every picture...With Canon colors are so much warmer and nicer! As of AF - i think it's the photographer that matters, not the tool he uses :o...But maybe i'll change my mind soon, who knows? I still got my d700 :)

Heehee, I just finished the opposite switch. After your honeymoon phase I'd love to hear what you think of the 5DII's AF ability.
Either way though, they're both great systems! I didn't switch because Nikon is better either, I switched because I had a disagreement with Canon

I've never owned Canon, but I do lurk here because there's a lot of good info flying around.

That being said I was recently in the nikon vs canon decision headache while upgrading to Full Frame cameras. I chose Nikon (D700) because I fel that the lenses I wanted were much better on the Nikon side, and the body was significantly better feature wise as well.

Now if I'd needed 20+ MP's then that would be a different story and I'd be shooting Canon (maybe Sony) right now. But I didn't. I needed great low light performance, quick and responsive AF performance, good frame rate, and high durability build. I also needed impeccable zooms in my selected focal length range. And the final requirement was a great flash system. The only brand that could check all those boxes confidently in my spending range? Nikon! I have a ton of respect for Canon, but there lineup just isn't there for me right now. 4 years ago things would have been different, as the 5D would have been the only game in town, but that's changed now.

My gear list is short but sweet:

D700
AF-S N 24-70 f/2.8
AF-S VR 70-200 f/2.8
85 f/1.8
SB-900 (speedlight) with 3 more on the way.

I really don't think that the Canon 24-70 is even in the same league as the Nikon. And I preferred the Nikon 70-200 as well, superb lens. I take my gear into the field quite often, so having an all magnesium and gasketed construction means a lot to me, and the zooms I use are also fully weather sealed. The AF system is as good as it gets in SLR's, and the frame rate is a healthy 5 FPS, with the possibility to expand to about 9 when needed.

I couldn't be happier.

Realy I think you are in a very happy position. You know what you want/need, you can articulate it and you are even luckier in having a system available that hits all of you need points. Many people have a more difficult time because they either cannot define what they need/want or are not able to find one system that hits all the points with strength.

When my brother in law wanted to get a camera (he has a film SLR) he asked me what I thought and it was apparent that Nikon hit his desires better than Canon. Canon suits me better (they were the only company commited to full frame when I bought, I like their TS-E line up much better and I now have too much equipment to switch) but I certainly would not push that on someone else if it didn't fit.

It is important to be able to honestly define your own criteria and if brand preference is one of them then even though that may not be on someone else's check list it is on yours and should be at least considered (although it may be one of the easiest things to bump off a list).
