now I have hoops done. I decided to follow all the wisdom here and bounce. I bounced off ceiling, back wall above each rim. Not the best set up here, but I eventually found my shooting zone.

It worked well tonight, but not sure I would do it again.

I sat in one corner with my 70-200 shooting close with on strobe on channel 3 firing. for the other side I used my 300 opposite strobe on
channel 4.

These are the 50D shots; need to do the 7D's tomorrow. All imported in Lightroom, color adjusted (ADVICE ON SETTING WHITE BAL WITH STROBES WANTED)

6) Dark, I know. Taken with camera on floor and pointing up, on the almost last, final free throw. I caught the image I wanted, just not the lighting. See you in Lightroom! (* 50D; 1/250; f4.5; 110 mm; ISO 250 *)

I think your bounced light looks fine. I shot a game last night too, but I'm on the road so I didn't bring strobes... just shot high ISO. But IMHO the colors are just always better with some extra light, especially when you balance/overpower the ambient to sufficiently freeze motion, which you seemed to do quite well here.

I like the look. Are the strobes ABs? I shot last night with a 580EX and my Minolta 320X and didn't have enough juice at 1/2 and 3/4 power to get enough above ambient. And I was shooting direct flash. Huge gym. I think your white balance is good. The amount of light you have filled in nicely. Good job.

#3 and 5 are very good shots. The strobing worked well. Out of curiosity, how many shots did you get and what was your keeper rate with the strobing?

Nice stuff here Vinnie! Are you trying to light both ends of the court? You may have an easier time just lighting one end of the floor, and putting a light on each side of the court. It looks like you could clamp on to the railing on the end of the bleachers if you had some power there.

Yes, Bill, I did this last year where I shot with 2 strobes on the same endline's corner. But that put one strobe under a scoreboard. I used to keep clock there and when photo'g had a strobe under the scoreboard, I was dizzy by the end of the night, so I will never do that :(

I will not but strobes in near fans or in site of a shot. It's just my thing. This gym is such a shoe box every flash is annoying. Which is why you see me hiding the strobes behind the side back boards.

I'll be back friday for girls and may set up my old way.

Thank you. I only went through 1 camera. My keeper rate jumped dramatically from freshman to JV, then JV to varsity. But for Varsity with this camera I kept about 140 out of 420, basically one in 4 for print.

see photo #7, they are monolights. I could use the 580, but I need to have the entire court of range as I am shooting for only one team, their highlight video, senior action photo & senior poster. Plus they hand out 10 5x7's to each kid.

Great shots and image quality. I like the spot you chose for the lights - We use the railings in our dungeon of a gym.

as for the white balance - shoot a gray card to start and sync all the images to the corrected set up shot with the gray card - keeps everything consistent - especially if you are 3-4 stops over ambient like you have in your gym so the white balance will not be impacted by the cycling gym lights

Nicely done...

Steve

may be a silly question, but how do you get the stobes up there? Where are the wires? What holds the strobes?

Great shots.

I have 3 ladders at the school a 3-foot, an 8-foot and 16-foot. School ends at 2:20; by 2:40 i am there setting up. They are clamped to the backboard with the speedotron clamp accessories for the model. They are tied with a shoelace, then secured with bungees.

What to you see tonight. I bounced again, but this time, clamped to the top of the (sideline) backboards, bounce directly above key. I have not reviews yet, and may not till sunday, but they looked very promising.

Shooting point #1: Sitting on 3 foot ladder, 70-200 changing from channel 3 to 4. (only one strobe fires at a time

Shooting point #2: Sitting on floor, 70-200 for near shots, 300 for cross court and busts coming up half court.

There is almost no room to shoot from the baselines. maybe 3-4 feet of space and refs always make you move.

Example of spot #2:

Vinny those look great. I have used the expo disc with good results. A little pricey but the results are worth the cost.
