Ok, this has been bugging me since day 1. On my Sony, I was able to move the joystick (multi-controller) around to choose my AF point (and start metering) at anytime. I am not used to having to press the shutter button halfway down to start metering and turn on "AF Start."

Is there anyway for me to be able to start the auto focus (and perhaps metering) with the multi-controller without using the AF-ON or Shutter button or at least make the timeout much longer than the default of like 3-4 seconds?

Thanks.

Good question, I've found the timeout to be a bit short as well. I don't know of any way to change it though.

I have to half press shutter or press af-on then move my focus point.

I don't know of any Canon camera that has metering/focusing activated by the joystick controller. Your options for assigning metering and focusing are in the first entry in the chart on p. 218 of the 7D manual.

What do you mean by the "timeout"?

Yeah, I've gone over the manual and didn't see anything. I was just wondering if I missed something obvious, but perhaps it just isn't possible with Canon cameras.

Timeout as in when you press the shutter button, it starts metering and AF Start. This gives you the ability to choose your AF point. So if you're looking through the VF and you're thinking about what to choose, it will eventually time out and you have to start it again to make your selection.

Thanks for the explanation. I've never tried that (I pick the AF point then start AF/metering after that), so had no idea what you meant.
