The A Series is now going squarely for the lower end of Canon's range, it looks like. Canon's announced (available in Feb.) the A490, A495, A3000 and A3100, priced between $110 and $180. and with 1/2.3" sensors. All are still using DiGiC III processors and none offer HD video. The 49x models have 10 MP sensors and 3.3x optical zoom; the A3000 has a 10 MP sensor while the A3100 has a 12.1 MP sensor, both with IS and 4x optical zoom.

The A3100/3000 still do not have full manual controls-lacking Av and Tv modes unlike some of the earlier pre-September 2008 A series models that did have those.

Canon cameras: PowerShot S95, SX20 IS, EOS 1100D (T3) & 300D.

You can shoot in P instead of Auto, where you have quite a bit of control over your setting, my gripe is about the tendency to do away with optical viewfinders, I consider them vital for following a moving target!:)
