i have all these gift cards for the apple store and i am making the jump to a mac laptop

i already have photoshop elements 7 on my pc, but rarely use it because it's a six year old desk top that runs a little too slow

would you suck it up and buy PE8 for the mac or just run PE7 through boot camp??

I'd just get elements 8 for mac seeing as you'd be getting a mac laptop. No point running windows software in bootcamp if there's an updated version for osx. I'd only use bootcamp or parallels for programs on windows which aren't available on mac and I haven't come across any i need yet.

Why make a jump for a few gift cards? Keep a windows computer and buy yourself an ipod or something.

You won't see anything by upgrading, but there's also no point in installing windows on a mac, even less in using virtualization software.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Why elements, if I may ask? If you have a student or teacher in the house (or friend) you could get a good deal on LR (like $89 I think right now). Then I would look into a program called Pixelmater - excellent program for those not needing full Photoshop. Easy to learn too - I picked it up running in less than twenty minutes and there are plenty of instructional videos/walk throughs on the net too.

I would also look into getting a refurbished Apple (here (external link)). Just like new, carry the same warranty and at a good price. Done write, you could get an Apple near the same cost as a PC - you just have to do a little homework (and know a student :) ).

Wow, you can smell a switcher two forums away :)

And I beg to differ (of course) - Having Windows on a Mac means you can literally 'have your cake and eat it too'. It's very liberating being able to run any program you want. Though I would tend to agree, it's a shame to put a Mac to waist with Windows on it ;)

Sorry, but quite untrue. If you go refurb apple, check out refurbs from everyone else, and apple isn't even close to the same price. Student discount wise, you can get up to $350 AND 15% off a purchase at dell, a bit more than $100 apple gives you. Yes, if you purchase 50+ units apple prices start getting close to other companies, but I don't think OP is going to be buying enough to even get close to your PO's there Maxxum ;)

But yes, if you have student discounts, get LR2, it's under $100, and not much more than standard PSE pricing of $80. And LR2 runs faster on even slower comps than PSE runs on faster ones. Takes longer to open PSE7 on my quad core core 2 duo than it does to open LR2 2.5 on my core duo laptop (quad core is no less than 3x faster, likely closer to 5x or more in terms of shear processing power), and that's while having half the RAM on the core duo.

I was speaking to premium products from HP, Alienware and Sony. No need to have purchasing power - but it helps ;) There are also little tricks (hard to find these days though) like joining the Apple Dev program then taking the first time discount for a new Mac; gaining an extra $200 off an already good gov discount.

But, its true. There's an Apple tax. It's been worth every penny for me though. Like today, there's this little nasty trojan (rootkit) going around our district. Infected like 800 machines in a day and we couldn't figure out what was doing it. Our virus programs didn't stop it or detect it. Firewall didn't see it either. Defender was asleep as usual and even Spybot and it's ilk passed it on by. Then I found the little culprit... it was entering our network via flashdrives. When you place the flash drive in a computer a popup comes up saying, "Open folder to view files..." Well, that's the program. It tricks people into opening the folder - when it does, you're infected. I had put like five of these flash drives in my MBP and never noticed the bugger until I opened up VMWare to mod some AD accounts when I saw the popup. Darn clever. Had to make a policy to disable all USB ports until we get it under control.

Edit, here's an example:

Interesting thing, never seen it before... though my keys have been infected by macs before (simple things my AV detects instantly), hence I refuse to put my usb keys in a mac (along with apple's stupid .trashes folder in EVERYTHING). But again, not something the average (or even well connected) user would see... since those things prey on less than intelligent individuals who don't pay attention to what they are doing. You're just as likely to install spyware on OSX as you are on ubuntu or windows (though the zoo is much larger for windows due to the giant user base), since it's 99% dependent on the user;)

99% dependant on the user indeed! Although I don't think there is currently any realy spyware for Mac OSX is there? (I could be wrong) definately two trojans, but you have to be acting illegally to get them!

If going with mac, get PSE8.

Elements 8 for mac reportedly gets the FULL Bridge/ACR goodness. (Not the crippled version you may be used to on windows.)

Most reviews state the exact opposite, that PSE8 for OSX is crippled because of bridge. You don't get history states, snapshots, virtual copies (using LR2 names for them, PSE8 calls them slightly different). If you go apple route, just buy LR2, you have enough money for it anyway if you are thinking about a mac.

Crippled compared to what?

CS4's Bridge doesn't do those things either, does it? All PSE8 for mac is missing compared to windows PSE is the organizer.... (which some people tend to hate anyway, or feel is repetitive with Iphoto.) I haven't used Elements 8, but I don't ever remember hearing of it having VC's, history, etc. Does it?... isn't it just a REAL edited copy of the file that it creates? Adobe certainly doesn't advertise it in their feature comparisons chart.

If Elements for windows would have had a full-blown ACR, I may not have felt the need to get LR (though I did get in at a Low price... never would have paid $300 for it.) Windows PSE is crippled ACR with limited adjustments and none of the new selective adjustments. Whereas mac PSE gets that... that's the huge bonus I'm speaking of.

I'm am just going to assume OP wants to use Mac because its simply what he prefers... doesn't necessarily mean he's got extra cash or is on a crusade against windows. But yes, if you DO get student discount... LR would be an easy choice for me too... I use it MUCH more than Elements.
