I could not tell under which forum to post this question--
How many of you have been buying things and keep it quiet from your better half?
Is there a support group for that around here?

That question goes in the divorce thread...

But, yes and no. I have "underestimated" the value of a lens or camera a few times. But not kept hidden thus far

Al Canon bodies bar the 1 series look the same (ish), so buy the body, hide the old body until, and put the new in your camera bag, she'll never know the difference.

Unless she has a very keen eye, and on the first day you get your nice new 7D out, she turns to you and says.

"Didn't that little badge used to say 20D?"

You need to prepare for that day, otherwise your screwed.

I've never hidden a purchase from my wife.

Now, if she fails to ask an amount, well, that's her mistake! ;)

Unfortunately for me I have two problems with this:

1. We do weekly receipt scanning and financial analysis.
2. She uses the camera almost as much as I do =P

There should be an option to order the cameras "debadged" like BMW offers for their cars :)

Good thread.

I've found that I just buy stuff and don't mention it. I've been able to go from an original DRebel to an XT to a 40D without any questions. I am trying to figure out if I can do the same with the 7D tomorrow when my Best Buy coupon kicks in. . .

I don't hide my purchases, but then I don't bring attention to them either ;-)a

I've got an advantage - my wife doesn't pay too much attention to what I say sometimes.

Two weeks after I got my 50D (mind you, I'd upgraded from a 400D), my wife and I bumped into a friend who spotted the 50D and asked when I got it, and I said I'd gotten it two weeks prior. My wife gave me a sharp look and I said, "But I told you when I was about to get it", which I actually had. She shrugged her shoulders and said, "Ah well, it's your money". By the time I got to the 5D, she'd stopped making a fuss about it.

One thing that takes the edge off things is that whenever we get together with her friends for birthdays, baptisms and the lot, I bring my camera along and give the photos to her friends. They love the photos and my wife sees some value in the expensive toys, so that evens things out. Besides, now that her S1IS has died, the 400D and 18-200 are at her disposal, although she complains that it's too big for her.
