I am looking to buy 2 super clamps to be used with Manfrotto Magic Arm mainly to support reflectors but might also use them to hold Speedlites in certain situations. Since I have never bought nor used super clamps before I thought I would ask other fellow photographers which ones are better (easier to use and better built). I own Manfrotto and Avenger light stands so I know both are good quality but in terms in super clamps which is superior, price is about the same.

To be more precise here are the 2 super clamps I am looking at:

Avenger C1575B Super Clamp

Manfrotto 035RL Super Clamp

And here's the Magic Arms I will get:

Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm

I'd go with the Manfrotto Super Clamp because of the lever handle that's used on it. You can get more leverage with it than you can with the handle that comes with the Averger Super Clamp. Other than that, they both seem to have similar specs. (I have the Manfrotto version.)

I use a pair of Impact Super Clamps (external link) to mount my Alien Bees on. I clamp them on to hand rails in the gym. No problems for me, and I have done it over and over.

Thanks Leo, it is exactly comments on the lever what I was the most interested in, since they are both probably the same quality. I think I will go with the Manfrotto ones then.

Are you bouncing the light to the ceiling of the gym?

Well, yes.

Interesting, I bounce my speedlites all the time, but I have never bounced my strobes before (something I got to try) :)

You could have bought three Impacts for the same money that you bought two Manfrottos.

Good luck. You will like them.

I've had some of my Bogen super clamps for about twenty years, still work great.

Impact has a place in my gear; I got 3 amazing and well built Impact Sandbags that I like a lot. I also have Speedlite to Lightstand hot shoe adapters from Impact but that is about it. I used to own a pair of Impact Lightstands and they broke apart after 1 year of use. Nothing agains Impact but I put my faith more on the quality of Manfrotto.

The impact clamps gave me some warm and fuzzy thoughts this year at the volleyball Regional Playoffs. One team in particular had about 20 exuberant (that's putting it nice) fans that stood next to my strobe and stomped the bleachers the whole time. When the teams switched sides, they went to the other end of the bleachers where my other light was mounted. They stomped the bleachers and whooped and hollered for 5 games! I checked the clamps to make sure the clamp was still tight on both ends. They passed the test with flying colors.

You see the piece that is held by the wingnut which tightens the stud? What is that? And why does it not get tight? Even when tightening the wingnut against a stud, it remains loose.

Also, does it matter which end of the stud you put in? I just bought two of these.
