You see the piece that is held by the wingnut which tightens the stud?

Mark, that piece is stored there in case you need it. It fits in the clamp jaw so that it is flat. The way the clamp is pictured, it would fit something round and tighten accordingly. But if it is a shelf for example, you would want two flat surfaces clamping down. That is what the piece is for. Just take it off and clip it into the clamp jaw.

Hope this makes sense.
Mike

as you can see in the following photo, I use the impact/avenger style. I have used the manfrotto and have seen no problem changing back to the avenger/impact style.

You, my friend, are a genius. Thank you.

Tell me, did I miss that in the instruction booklet which was in 900 languages, but said absolutely nothing about it in any of the languages?

And I was just tightening the clamp, to play with it, to my butcher block and I was thinking it may not be so secure the way it was shaped. It sure is now.

Thanks again.

CanonBob, that is an awful confusing picture to a dope like me. I've been interested in getting a magic arm so I have more range with the lights in case the clamp doesn't allow me to put the light on in some situations.

Are there specific configurations of the magic arms to get? ARe they strong enough to hold a monolight?

Thanks,
Mark

and what, prey tell, are those pieces of paper with trees on them?

Also, I've seen someone here complimented for using braided wire as a safety line. Anyone have a link to that, please?

You know mark you keep calling me canon BOB... lol.. the magic arms are super strong but I am not sure if I would feel comfortable putting a monolight on top of one of the magic arms.

but I use a couple of these as safety cables:

Here is the thread on security cables I started a while back. Fortunately I haven;t had to put them to use but they are attached every time I mount my lights.

If you like, skip to post #18. That's where I described how and what I used to make my cables.

And I realized it and went to correct it but my wife needed something.

Sorry about that.

That's exactly what I was thinking of. Thank you, Leo. Of course, they're out of stock.

Yeah, I noticed that too the last time I tried to order a few more. It's been sitting in my wishlist ever since, waiting to come back into stock.

There are others that are available but the wire is of a lighter gauge. This one is really good for the heavier strobes. Actually, with a load capacity of 66 pounds, it might be a tad overkill for strobes but it does give me the option of using it for other heavy-duty applications.

Leo (or anyone else), this morning I ran across a post in a thread wherein a guy made covers for the quadra heads out of a food container, complete with schematic diagram. I can't find it. (Not the one with the white plates from the bbq)
