I'm pretty familiar with the MKIII, and the history and corrections for the AF problems that model has. But, I'm not to familiar with the MKIIn. What AF problems (if any) did the MKIIn have that the AF in the MKIII was supposed to address? If you don't need the resolution bump, or higher ISO, will the AF in the MKIIn be as good as, or better than, the MKIII when it comes to shooting sports, motorsports, and Airshows? I'm seeing good deals on MKII's and MKIIns starting to show up locally.

Lastly, was their any improvements to the AF befeen the MKII and MKIIn ?

Thanks all.

The Mark II and the Mark II N are excellent cameras. Many people don't agree with him but read Rob Galbraith's analysis/comparison of the Mark III with the Mark II N: http://www.robgalbraith.com …_page.asp?cid=7-8740-9068 (external link)

The Mark III has an entirely new autofocus system from the Mark II.

I know the MkIII AF is different, but is there some particular deficiency in the IIn's AF that the new system is trying to address?

Don't think theres to much difference between af speed between the 2, the markIII has better higher Iso quality though.

I can't say I see any crazy differences but Im not shooting much sports either.

However, I will take this opportunity to shamelessly plug my minty IIn for sale in my sig. The only real reason I got a Mark III was for the noise quality since I shoot weddings with it. By the way, price is very negotiable.

From Canon's whitepaper about the differences between the 1D2 and 1D3, here are the ones that mention autofocus:

• New Area AF sensor with 19 high-precision, cross-type AF points + 26 Assist AF points
• 19 points: Cross-type focusing with f/2.8 or faster lenses
• 26 points: Horizontal line-sensitive focusing with f/5.6 or faster lenses
• Center AF point: Horizontal line-sensitive focusing with f/8 or faster lenses
• AF points can be set to the inner or outer 9 AF points
• AF microadjustment provided (fine adjustment of AF point of focus)
• For AI SERVO AF, the AF operation characteristics, AF point selection characteristics,
and focus-tracking sensitivity can be adjusted
• During manual AF point selection, AF point area is expandable
• Switch to registered AF point is possible (Home Position function)

If you have problems with AF, try downgrading the firmware to v1.2.3... I know it sounds bonkers but my BIF keeper rate fell badly when I upgraded my firmware to v1.2.5 and only recovered when I went back to the prior verision. I've had this opinion backed up by a number of friends who are also BIF fans and were also unhappy with firmware v1.2.5.

Enjoy the MkIII, it's a fabulous camera :)

The MK2n AF are very good, I remember the AF tracking stay in tune with a couple of woodduck nuptial ballet, they go very fast, but the AF stay there. Canon try to upgrade the AF of the 1D2 serie for a better low light AF (Canon achile heel complaint compared to the D2X) and a faster acquisition in fast action. The IDMk3 are a very good camera, the image quality are up to a the 5D legend.

I have the iin and like it for most part.
The only complain I have is that the shutter broke at around 27,000 shots.
