I thought this might be of intrest as i think it turned out rather well although a little detail is lost but i expected that :)
Lens was 500f4isL+1.4tc
Shot taken at 1/2500 f11 iso 6500 slightly over expossed so well to the right. not much cropped off

What i did in CS3 First a bit of levels.
Then went round the bird with the magnectic lasso tool .
sharpend the bird
Then removed Half the noise with neat image
Then select inverse so now working on just the background.
Neat image again but full noise reduction.
save for web
Then reopened in CS3, Mangnectic lasso again and re sharpened just the bird.
save for web again.
Finshed.

Perhaps it is just me but it is a great shot of the bird but it almost looks too sharp against the background....almost as if the image was pasted there or something....especially around the head,, neck and shoulder area. Again, maybe it is just my eyes.

it may be a tad oversharpened that is easily sorted I am more impressed with the quality of the image at such a high iso with overexposing the shot it has done the trick here, I have been thinking of the 7D but have not seen very good images to be honest but this does look good I have been worried about the noise issues and things I have been reading am I right in saying you have to nail the exposure with this camera

points taken and yes does look a bit over done now its posted.
its here to show the iso more than anything :)
Kaz it does help to go to the right a little but i dont worry to much be it a stop under or a stop over i work in manule all the time so often can be a bit out as takeing bird shots .
They dont give you much time to change settings with say a cloud comeing over lol
Rob.

It's all been said and I agree but aside from that the IQ is darn good for the ISO setting.

Nice shot, but one little point - everytime you save as a jpeg and reopen then resave as a jpeg you are compressing the compression of the first instance and throwing more and more image data away. Think of it as copying an audio cassette to another audio cassette, then making a copy of that copy etc etc. Each generation deteriorates in quality, so try to avoid saving as a jpeg till you are completely finished processing it. You can save as a tiff till you get to the final result, to keep all the data intact, then delete the tiff when you have your final jpeg. Tiffs do use up a lot of memory as they are uncompressed and their size equates to 1 bit per pixel per channel. So a 6MP image with three channel (RGB) is 18MB and a 21MP image will be 63MB. Soon eats up a hard drive! Fieldfares are absolutely gorgeous and I have several in my garden along with a few Redwings at the moment, they love apples. Here a clip I shot today I have just put on Youtube, may take a while to appear as I have only just done it

Take your point Dave and agree but the second opening and sharpen is only for showing on the web ,it just makes them look so much better /punchier .

Tescos do a little bag of 'market apples' for 68p a kg, cheapest I could find. I scoured the countryside for fallen apples before the snow came, only taking those that the birds themselves couldn't get to ie ones submerged in a stream or in the roads, otherwise I would be taking food from birds there, but mine have scoffed the lot in no time. But be sure to spread them around, not in one pile, as one Fieldfare will try to keep everyone else from getting 'his' and they will spend all day fighting instead of eating!
