I currently have a Sandisk Ultra CF card with 4 gigs. It's rated at 30mb/sec but I seem to fill up the buffer quite a bit with the way I shoot. Will a faster card be better for me? I mostly shoot full res jpeg, but that's just because raw files fill up 4 gigs waaay too quickly. I'm wanting a 16 gig card. What's the best I can get for ~$150-$200? I'm thinking of ordering it from BH.

I spent $60 on mine from a mom n pop shop in town. After checking it out online, I'm realizing that was pretty over priced. I was looking at Best Buy the other day. It was cheaper to get several 4 gigs than one big card, which is stupid. I don't want to keep changing. I've been down that road with my old point and shoot. Never again.

I hear that CF is being phased out. Are we CF card people in any immediate danger of not being able to find our card type anymore? Is it best to get all the space I can afford now so I'm not needing to buy more when more isn't out there? I'm I just being paranoid? How true is this rumor?

Which card is best for me?

Thanks for listening to my ramblings. :D

Higher density storage often cost more than lower density storage. Its the same deal with hard drives where two 1TB drives costs less than one 2TB drive. You'll probably find that your camera's ability to write to the card is the speed limit, not the card. Do a Google search on 50D write speeds. I found that my 5D can only write at something like 10MB/sec so getting faster cards won't help in the camera although it does make getting them into the computer faster.

Being the biggest format of card, CF has the physical space to hold a lot more data than other formats so I don't see it being phased out any time soon. Even if no one ever made another new camera with a CF slot, there's still a lot of cameras out there that use CF so you'd be able to get cards for years.

I've got a 16GB Sandisk Extreme - its UDMA, and is tremendous for burst shooting (not the the 5DMkII is a speed machine!).

I've also got an 8GB Extreme IV, a 16GB Extreme III and a couple of 8GB Extreme III. I'd recommend all these cards - and VFM wise the Extreme IIIs offer great bang for buck.

Can't see CF cards going any time soon....

I was in the same situation as you when looking for a CF card for my 7D. After doing my research i ordered a photofast gmonstor 16gb 533x plus. Here is a thread on it. It also saved me easily 100 bucks on the sandisk equivalent sold at B&H. Card is flawless especially with the burst rates of the 7D. Never had a slow down at all :)

I hear that CF is being phased out.

Not hardly, all of Canon's DSLR cameras outside the Rebel line use CF.
