Playback issues with 5DMII

Sorry if my question has been brought before but I tried a search on the topic and couldn't come up with anything. I've been capturing 1080p video with the 5DMII and noticed a skip/delay during playback on my laptop. For example, if the segment of the video was 30 seconds...the playback wouldn't be an uninterupted stream but would have skips of delay throughout the segment. Can anyone help me out on this? Is this a laptop issue or something having to do with the camera settings or possible the memory card.

Thanks.

It's called video lag caused by dropped frames. If you have quicktime, that's the issue right there. Install ffdshow and have QT NOT play .mov files. Quicktime is a very slow decoder and mostly useless outside of OSX because of how slow it is. Unless your laptop is a CULV or 3 years old, you also have too much garbage there.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

At first I played them with quicktime. I then tried converting the .mov file to play in media player (wmv file I think). It played a little better but still not what it should be.

My laptop is about 5 years old (HP w/ 5as MB of RAM and Intel 1400mh M processor). It has no issues with playback of other video files including those shot with a MarK 5DMII so why would it have issues with playback of video that I record?

Is it maybe the setting on my camera (I currently have it set to take L photos (jpeg format in the largest pixel size)?

Thanks.

Video shot with a 5dmkii and a video file directly from a 5dmkii are VERY different things. To properly playback 5dmkii raw video, you need a processor that is 4 times faster than what you have (2gh core 2 duo). If you have DXVA (you don't, trust me), maybe your processor is good enough. Most "shot with 5d" videos out there (vimeo), are actually presented in 720p with low bitrate, and even an atom processor based netbook can do those.

Thanks. I can't afford to upgrade my laptop at this moment. Do you know of any other options that I might have (converting to a different file type, changing camera configuration settings, etc..)

Thanks again.

No, you will not be able to play 1080p video with that laptop. Even core duo 2gh laptops have issues with 5dmkii files regardless of what you do, though 2gh core 2 duo will work fine if you know how to set it up.

The only thing you can do is convert it to a low bitrate 720p video (WMV) or medium bitrate 720p video (mpeg 2 hd, perhaps WMV, but can't say WMV will work), but then it'll be useless for anything but just watching it on your computer.

Like I said, the best you can do is to either wait for the firmware and 720p (1280x720 vs the 1920x1080 from 1080p) video, or re-encode the video to 720p yourself. If that still gives you issues, use 480p (848-856 x 480, either end if you want mod 16 (required for some video types), 853 if you want the closes to 16:9 widescreen you can get). you can also use 720x480 AR 1.78 if you want to keep it DVD compatible). As for codecs, stick to mpeg 2, WMV, or perhaps baseline profile h264.

You can get laptops currently for $400-700 that will work just fine, and decent desktops in the $500 range if you build it yourself. Don't tell me you got a 5dmkii without knowing the limitations of your editing system... that would be like buying a hydrogen car only to find out there are no pumping stations within 300 miles.
