^^^ I agree, but, when you add up the cost of two or three modifiers it adds up!

That's true, but it also adds up when you're buying another couple of lights.

Bottom line - it all costs :-)

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Let us know if they're shipping them with the rubber bands.

Given that the fixed speedring gripper mechanism is 35 days out, that should be a given...

They owe me four Einsteins: Two E640s to replace my V1s and two additional E640s that I ordered in July. I told them not to send me anything until the V2.5 versions are shipping in another five or six weeks. I can't be bothered with interim fixes.

I got a call today and they said that they would ship my order out tonight. 2 800s , a comander set up and some other gear, it caught me by suprise, because I had nearly gived up,because of time and the problems that they have had.I asked if they had the problems fixed, she said yes. But since I have not stayed up on this thread, I told them not to ship. I needed to catch up. I was not on the prorder list. I had sent an order 5 0r 6 months ago. So maybe they are catching up.

Dave,
I like your idea of waiting to make sure everything is fixed, rather than dealing with interim fixes. I actually have not experienced any of the problems associated with the V1, and from a technical standpoint, I think they are outstanding lights. Nonetheless, I look forward to swapping out my two E640s for the newer version, so the original problems do not eventually occur.

But quite honestly, my two units have served me well so far. Of my six lights (2-WL1200; 1-WL600; 1-600RX; 2-E640) I prefer to use the E640s the most. If I need a third light, I add the Eli. Lately, the Lightnings have been sitting in the closet. I rarely need more than 3 lights.

I'm pretty pissed that PCB didn't work out these issues before the initial release. Using consumers as beta testers to flush out problems with build-quality is (in my opinion) just as bad as using consumers to resolve design flaws. I think if I had experienced the types of problems associated with the V1 (melting case, etc.) I probably would have ditched my two units and just added two more 600RXs. ...

I'm not sure how prevalent the heat issue from the modelling light was (since it didn't seem to affect my units), but I can't believe that everybody who purchased the V1 now needs to swap them out!! Unbelievable. In my case, I'll still have 4 lights while my 2 V1s are getting shipped back & while I wait for the V2s to arrive. ... Not everybody has so many lights, and PCB is putting them at a huge inconvenience. ... That's hardly what I would call good customer service. While not having access to my two units will not really affect me one bit, I suspect most V1 owners are in a different boat.

Some people got their V2s which were shipped w/ a *postage paid* mailing label for the V1s. The same will hopefully be true w/ the V2.5 swap for those who got the V2s. Sounds more than reasonable to me...like the free loan of ABs for those who pre-ordered the ABMax...

FWIW, I'm waiting for the V2.5's. No RP Jrx control of the Einstein yet, so I've still been using my WL or AB when doing shoots because setup is so much faster...

^ +1 The process for the V1 exchange is that PCB will ship you the V2 and return labels, once you get the V2, you ship back the V1.

My late May order should be coming up any day now, I believe mine will have to go back for replacement once the new arms are in, but at this point I rather have something to play with than nothing at all.

Dave,

I had an issue with one of my V1s that required its replacement. The two V1s I'm currently using have been humming along without incident. However, I did come up against one of the known V1 design issues today: I discovered that my Norman AB/Balcar speed ring inserts cannot be mounted on an E640 V1. The screws holding the spring clips for the Pyrex diffusion dome prevent the Norman insert from seating properly. The reworked E640 V2 front end no longer has protruding screw heads on the faceplate. This is an example of another design flaw that should have been identified before the first Einstein was shipped to a customer.

Since I don't need to use the Norman inserts, I've elected to stick with my V1s until the V2.5s are shipping. There's no way I'm going to use lights, even temporarily, that rely on rubber bands to safeguard against modifiers falling off.
