How do you get your photos to look like this? (image inside)

I would very much like to know how to achieve this. Im a novice, but im thinking this has some kind of reflectors or location lighting on him? please correct me if Im wrong, if anybody has any detailed write ups on how to get images lit like this on location I'd appreciate it a great deal

Well, you can see the low natural lighting on his right side and in the sky behind. As to the lighting that is casting the shadow of his ascot onto his shirt, it sure looks rather harsh to me.

The light coming from the left and behind the subject is the sun. Without another light source in this shot the subject would be in heavy shadow.

So the photographer placed a flash off to the right side of the picture in front of the subject. The flash is lighting him. I'd say from the shadows of his scarf that the flash is bare - no softbox or umbrella or anything.

If I was a photojournalist working alone and taking this shot I would attach my flash to the end of a monopod and wire it to the camera with a 6' synch cable. Then I would hold the flash out to the side for this shot.

The toughest part would be having the flash off to the right as all cameras are made for right handed operation.

Pretty simple technique.. Lowish sun side lighting from the left with a little fill flash to the right..

thank you everyone for the input! I was guessing that it was some sort of a flash to his right. As you can also see in his sunglasses there's also a white dot in his left {our right} lens. I just like how it's so well lit. The background due to natural light, and the foreground (his white clothes amplify this) with flash.

Ive got a lot of questions that Ill start asking pretty soon here. Can't wait to get them answred, glad I found this forum!

Actually it's a very simple shot,, no rocket science needed.. With thought something similar can be done with a point and shoot..
