I bought a 7D on eBay today, but it is a new camera from Adorama. The price was $1,700, but I had $395.25 in “eBay Bucks” credit and a coupon for $100 off, so my total outlay for the camera was $1,213.60.

That’s less than I paid for a new EOS 20D ($1,330) in 2005. Hopefully, I’ll be satisfied with this one for a while. I have now bought five digital cameras since the initial Pentax *ist D in 2004.

Once the 7D arrives and I verify that it works correctly, I will sell my 1D Mark II N on eBay.

What makes the 7D better? Three things stand out for me. One, low noise at high ISO. Two, the autofocus is controlled by a dedicated processor. And three, 18 megapixels.

I take pictures of college athletes in mid-Michigan and sell prints to their parents on a web site. Perhaps with the 7D I can start offering prints up to 20x30 in size.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts and evaluations in going from a 1D2N to a 7D since I'm debating on getting either a 50D, 7D or used 1D2N.

Wouldnt say low noise at high ISO, 'bout the same as my 50D but the noise is finer somehow, easier to deal with.

I could safely say it's lower, from use of a 40D, ISO 1600 upwards the 7D is far more useable.

And no pattern noise.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Well only done a few basic tests but it is not blowing me away from 800-1600 and at ISO200 the 50D is better.

Strange, my 7D pictures in the studio are much nicer than the 40D ones at ISO 100, and the 40D had a sharper lens.

As someone who had the 40D, 50D then 7D (I even owned them all for a few weeks), IMO the 7D is maybe about a half stop better than the 50D in high ISOs (3200-12800) without the banding issue, about the same at 800-1600, and may be a tad more noisy 100-400 than the 50D. "Tad more" is insignificant to me, high ISO advantage significant to me.
Also, important to add that the 7D hangs on to detail better at high ISOs than the 50D.
I loved my 40D, loved my 50D more, and love my 7D even more :) But I have no bias towards any of them.

Oh, and speaking of high ISO images, here are a few ISO 12800 pics, which I processed heavily, but they came out more than usable. And again, no banding.

Thanks. Actually, I just gave her a new scratchboard with catnip, and recorded the whole scene on video with my 7D. I almost always forget about the HD video, so I was just going to take some pics and wishing it'be so cool to have it on video :D
Then the lightbulb went off above my head... :D
