On my 50D, in the Menu, in Flash Control, Built-in flash func setting, (this camera has E-TTL-ll). On my camera, the first line shows Flash Mode and E-TTL-ll is not lit up. If Canon and the 50D says we have E-TTL-ll, then either my camera is not working the way it should or I am missing something. On your 50D's, does the E-TTL-ll Flash Mode light up?
Yes or no and am I missing something in the menu's.

I thank you all for your help.

The built-in flash can only work in E-TTL II mode so there's no reason to allow you to change that setting. That's the reason it's grayed out. That's the setting by default and can't be changed.

Now, on the 7D which does have a built-in flash that can work in E-TTL mode, Manual mode or Mutli mode, the flash mode is selectable.
