I am a enthusiast who just purchased a 1d Mark lln and a 85 1.8 lens. I was using a 40D with a 70-200 lens. Last night I shot basketball in a low light gym. I shot on the AV mode with the f1/8. When I crank up the ISO to 1600 or higher the noise is terrible. Do I need to change modes to P or TV, or just deal with this gym situation??

ISO 1600 from the 1D2 should be fine. Av mode should be fine too. If something is throwing off the Auto-Exposure, then P or Tv won't make much difference. Your next option would be do make the leap to Manual mode to fully control exposure.

Proper exposure is critical to good high-ISO performance on the 1D Mark II. A good WB is also important.

Can you post a sample?

I will try, not sure how to resize to attach, but I am reading as we speak. Thanks for answering my post. I am sure that the only way for me to learn is to ask.

I added contrast and changed the color on the picture to the left. I did no adjustments to the picture on the right.

Can't really tell much about the noise when they're resized... the pixels really get interpolated at web size. But the noise doesn't look too bad.

Exposure and WB look OK too.

Maybe post a 100% crop so we can see the noise... especially if you have a comparison crop at similar exposure levels where your 40D wasn't as terrible as the noise you're seeing on your 1D2.

I went from a 40D to a 1D2 too... the high-ISO performance is very similar. The T1i and 1D3 are about 1-stop better... IMHO noise at 3200 on the 1D3 or T1i looks as good as 1600 on the 1D2 or 40D.

I actually had the pictures reversed as of the description. The one on the right was corrected and the left was not. Again not sure how to post 100% crop but will try. Gosh learning is time consuming. Again thanks for your comments.

Yep, I kinda figured the one on the right was the color-corrected one.

What are you using for cropping and resizing?

At the very least, install Picasa from http://picasa.google.com (external link)
