Approaching Storm, Montana

I took this photo in Moccasin, Montana, last week while driving through on my summer vacation. The storm you see here was quite intense, and provided lots of rain shortly after we left. Originally in color, I split the photo into color channels and used mostly the red channel, with bits of the blue channel on the building, and other bits of the green channel on the grass. I know there's a B&W Photos section, but I think it fits in better here.

Good shot i like it B&W is the right choice for this subject IMHO.

Sdommin - I went to see your gallery on pbase and I was really impressed. You have got a lot of talent. Are you a professional? How long have you been practising photography? How do you manage to get such sharp shots? Are they getting that sharp out of your camera or do you Photoshop them a bit? I really like the composition in your shots. Congratulations!

Hey, thanks Lord Jim. No, I'm not a professional, just someone who enjoys taking photos. It gives me an excuse and a reason to go to some pretty neat places that wouldn't think of going to otherwise. I've been taking photos as a "serious amateur" since 1976, when I bought my first 35mm SLR, a Canon FtB.

One way to get sharp photos is to use good equipment. Right now I mostly use the Leica Digilux 2 (as in the photo above). It has the sharpest lens I've ever used - including Canon "L" glass. Another way I get sharp photos is that I use Corel PhotoPaint's version of USM. It seems to do a better job, at least for me, of sharpening.

Scott - You are welcome. Thank you for your answers. I have just seriously started photography three months ago and I have a lot to learn. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford some very good equipment including some Ls and a 20D. However, I am not getting the results that I have in mind yet but I am giving myself some years to get there. I will continue to watch your gallery regularly as it is really inspiring. Wonderful image, and your gallery confirms it's not an accident. One of the nicest collections of work I've seen in quite a while.

The amount of detail (and more importantly its precision) in that shot (B/W & color) is incredible.
