Lens resale values...

I dropped my 85/1.8, chipped the glass and was looking for another.

I just have to say the resale price of these things used is ridiculous. In the classified forum they are going for $365 which is basically the cost of a new one with a full warranty. The thing I find odd is people are buying them. Ebay's the same way.

Is saving $15 on a used, out of warranty item that important to ya'll?

Glass holds its value very well. Used prices are usually 10 to 20% cheaper than new. For some folks it's not worth it. For others, it's a great deal. When you're talking 20% off of $2,000, that $400 makes a big difference.

Those are asking prices, not necessarily buying prices. I have saved a lot on certain lenses off of regular market price. I find Canon stuff holds it's value better than third party lenses so I ususally buy new if I am getting a Canon lens just for the warranty.

bing is currently at 8%. I bought all my gear BNIB on ebay from authorized canon resellers when bing was at 20%........ I've seen bing as high as 35%........

If you know what you're doing, you can buy BNIB with full warranty for LESS than what people are trying to sell USED for on this forum...... I have not seen a SINGLE item in the classified section of this forum that I would consider a good deal.....

I guess I'm different because on a high ticket item I'd rather have the warranty and all the "protection perks" associated when buying something this pricey.

You can survive a cheaper item if things go south though.

get yourself on one of those websites that automatically email you when bing gets above a certain percentage (mine is set at 15%). Email gets pushed to my Blackberry and I buy everything I'm 'watching.' I had an absolute FIELD DAY when bing was at 35%. About 4 weeks ago it was at 20%..... It's usually only that high for a day, sometimes only a few hours, you have to jump on it ASAP.

Me, too. When i was looking for a 100-400L i spent a lot of time looking at used ones. At that time, new from most places was about $1300. The best used price I could find was $1200 from a guy who got VERY angry when I suggested maybe his "no returns, no warranty" policy wasn't worth saving the $100. Seriously, he acted like I was trying to steal his baby. No thanks, even for $200 I would rather get a new one where I can return it if its a lemon and have a warranty if I need some adjustments from Canon.

But if you're REALLY on a budget and really trust random people on the internet (ebay? craig's list??) ... i guess used is one way to go.

even if it's a mate, what do you do when it's lost in the post or broken or their ideas of EUC is different to your? IDK sometimes selling stuff to even people you know doesn't work out so good

bing deposits money into my paypal account within MINUTES. I guess Microsoft is trying to buy their way into the internet, trying to battle google.

I can buy almost ANY camera product, BNIB, from an authorized canon retailer for LESS than most people are trying to sell used for on this forum.
