Does anyone know of a camera bag that would be nice for 7d and 100-400 attached and ready for quick use while hiking?

I've been thinking Lowepro's SlingShot 300 AW might to do the job, but haven't had time to find a store near enough to try a test fit.

Will watch this thread to see if someone has a better thought.

I've got the same set up Jack and also do a lot of back country walking. I use the Tamrac Adventure 10.

I wouldn't call it 'accessible for quick use' but it's good in that it has truckloads of room and means you can fit everything you need for the day.....spare clothes, food, drink etc. No need for any other bags.

Matt.

I just got a Think Tank holster bag. WOW, it fits my 40D with 70-200 2.8 IS perfectly and even has room to expand. I haven't tried it with the 100-400 yet, but I think it'll be fine.

Look at the Think Tank Digital Holster 50. It'll hold a gripped body/Canon 28-300mm L (which is roughly the same size as the 100-400mm L). I keep a gripped body/Sigma 150-500mm OS in mine, with the hood on ready to shoot. I've fit the 28-300mm L in there on a gripped body and it fits great, also with the hood on ready to shoot.

the only drawback to the Holster is that it's basically just for a body/lens combo, and you won't have much room for anything like batteries and such. But, for a simple solution for carrying gear, it works perfectly.

I use the LowePro OffTrail 2 to hold my 1DMKIII with a 100-400 attached, without the hood.

I really like the TT holsters but I don't think I would choose one for hiking unless I had something of equal weight to carry on the other hip and balance the load. Using an off-balance load like that is rough on the hips and legs when crossing even moderately rough terrain.

I would also be concerned about having anything rubbing against my legs/thighs when walking because it really adds to fatigue.

I don't generally like backpacks for carrying camera gear but they are the right choice for hiking.

Depending on what type of hiking you do, and if you want your gear ready to shoot, maybe you should take a look at the Cotton Carrier.

Can't hurt to at least take a look at it.

Hi have the Lowepro's SlingShot 300 AW for my 7d, with 70-200. Fits great, and room for other lens. There is also some room left for a bigger lense.

If you're looking for a backpack, I use and like the Kata R103. It's got a middle compartment with separate zipper where a body with the 100-400 with hood can be stored and quickly grabbed. It also has room for an extra body, lenses, flash, etc. Its outer shell is a little harder than most other backpacks so that your equipment is protected while on your back. It has a detachable rain cover.
