How bad of an idea is this?

I would like to know if replacing my 70-200 2.8 IS with a 85mm f/1.8 USM and a 200mm f/2.8L II USM. I feel I never use the 130mm of this lens. This lens is a pain to carry around and I don't seem to feel the love I did with my 70-200 f/4 IS. By doing so I would even be able to buy a 3rd lens with the extra money.

Sounds like a good idea if you primarily use the long end of the zoom.

If you don't need or want the IS...

I'd probably keep it as well. But, if you were trading to primes because you needed something faster, that would make sense.

Ah forget it. No dirt protection on the 85mm and no IS on the 200mm...I stick with the do it all "CANON" like in tank turret/canon 2.8 IS. I guess I will get use to the weight.

I think you made the right choice.

I think it's a good idea. I sold my 70-200 and replaced it with primes for the same reason. I've never missed it.

I like the idea, then again I like primes. I have the 200mm 2.8 L and its outstanding!

i would never get rid of mine either. it's such a versatile lens for me. if i were in your shoes, i would just save up a little and buy the 85mm outright

Sold my 70-200 f/4 IS and is thinking exactly same thing. 135mm f/2, 85mm f/1.8 and 200mm f/2.8. I hope I made the right choice 135mm f/2 might give me better shots in dim lit indoor shots and want to try 200f/2.8 with 2x TC. I guess I can always go back.

i got the 200/2.8L and the 135/2L and i find that they are outstanding lenses. the 135L is most of the time with me. it's much lighter than the zoom. but then you said that you hardly ever use the 130mm range... nonetheless, I think it is a good idea.

I would be interested in knowing how much you want for the 70-200 if you are going to get rid of it.

you could always get the f4 IS and the 100 f2 or 85 1.8.

I would stick to the zoom since it offers more flexibility. It also has IS if you use that a lot on the longer end. If I were you I'd use only 85mm and 200mm on the 70-200 for a week and see if that floats your boat so you can have an idea of whether those two focal lengths will work for you.
