I just got myself a new Canon PIXIMA Pro9000 II printer which I am really excited about. The problem is that I have several boxes of Kodak and HP paper which I don't know what to do with now that I have my new printer. I have several unopened boxes of:

  • Kodak Ultra Premium Photo Paper
  • Kodak Premium Picture Paper, and
  • HP Premium Plus Photo Paper
I have been unable to find any printer/paper profiles online for these papers and the Pro9000. Is it worth trying to use this paper, or will it just end up being a wast of time, ink, and paper?

Thanks!
~Dom

Your one best hope is to do some research on the papers, track the manufacturers, and see if you can find ink/printer compatibility. There are some combinations that do "OK", but I wouldn't do anything serious on them without some careful tests. Do a few prints, of a variety of colors and tones, on 8.5x11 paper -- the results should speak for themselves as far as image quality. The research comes in when it comes to things like longevity and paper absorbtion matched to ink.

I looked online and couldn't find any profiles for the Kodak and HP papers. I tried printing a couple of pictures on both the Kodak and HP papers, but they looked muddy and quite flat (although they print OK on my HP 7350). I installed the Red River printer profiles for their Arctic Polar Gloss (I ordered a box the same day as my printer) and printed out the same sample prints. The results with the Red River Arctic Polar Gloss Paper and RR Profile were incredible, like night and day!

I am using LR on a Dell M4400 laptop to edit my photographs. I really would like to have a decent external monitor I can profile but that will have to wait. I am way over budget on my photography spending this year!

What to do with the HP and Kodak paper? I will donate it to my school which I know has two or three HP Photo Printers and a Kodak Easy Share printer. The paper should make pretty good prints for school use on those printers.

Good for you -- you found what works for you and you get to help out the school!

lol, only 11 days into it :) The guy at the photo store tells me that Kodak an HP do not profile for competing printers. The best he told me to do was use similar paper profiles.
