Thanks for all the help and tips. I have noticed a weird issue however, In One Shot I have it micro adjusted to -4 to which works perfectly at any distance and even at f4 wide open but anything to do with fast moving tracking like Birds or Panning with cars, I need to micro adjust -15 to get sharp shots. Now -4 works but looking at my images, I get a lot more sharp images at -15 versus -4. Yet it's the complete opposite for standalone Subjects where I would use -4. I know that sounds crazy but it sure looks like the lens is struggling to keep up with the AF of the 1D Mark IV and that is my other point, I don't want to waste $3,000 on a 300mm f2.8 or $4,000 on 400mm f2.8 if the AF of the lens isn't going to be any better. I'd rather just complete change my entire setup.

Anyway had better luck today with panning. Used Single AF with Left and Right AF enabled instead of expanded. Tracking was on default Middle

Based on your list of gear, it doesn't appear that you have another long lens, but if at all possible, try another lens to rule out the 1D4. If push comes to shove, you may want to send the lens to Canon for an inspection.

I did have the 70-300L for a weekend when I originally got the camera. Didn't notice any issues but still a lot of shots missed because of the cameras AF. My dad is getting a T6s Sunday. I will test the lens and compare.

When I am in a situation where the camera could lock onto something other than my intended focus area I always use expanded left and right. In fact, I find it very useful. It is much easier to keep the focus on the face of your target in any situation where a body part may move ahead of the face of your target. I wish canon offered this option on their newer cameras.

Interesting.... I've been using the expanded up and down points because I thought it would be the best for birds. I was guessing it would be better for up and down movement.... but I can see where the expanded left and right would also be a benefit.

I also use that double spot you get when you click up or down with the joystick in AF selection mode. Have you found that effective?

Went out today and practiced Panning a few cars again, left and right made a huge difference with focus accuracy. Expanded AF just made my shots soft because the camera was choosing the wrong spot to focus on. Perfect example is the Iguana's I photograph. I always focus on their eye but with expanded enable it would focus on their noise or 2-3 inches behind their eye. I thought my lens needed to be adjusted but it's expanded AF, So now I turn it off completely and then when I pan with a bird or car, I use Left and right AF. The issue however is you cannot quickly change it so I am still missing a lot of opportunities because everything AF wise is hidden deep in the custom functions controls. Even if you throw in my menus, It's still too much time to sit there and change when a simple button push or button and wheel combination would be much better.

I have to admit...I am not getting it.

So you set your camera to left and right AF. You cannot quickly change it. To what?
And yes you can. With a single button switch between two almost completely different custom settings.
You ought to spend a bit more time with the manual. Also, Google Jim Neiger bird photography - he has written really good articles with a ton of tricks and tips about the 1DIV and shooting BIF.

Cheers

Read through the thread, I have set my settings to these (http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/2371 (external link)). Also keep in mind I am dealing with a slow lens which may affect a different look at the camera than you. I have gone through the menus on the 1D Mark IV, I have yet to find any custom button layout.

I won't spend a lot of time on this, as I see you have this listed for sale and you're looking for a 1Dx. Is the slow lens you're talking about the 300 f/4L? If so, in sunshine and daylight, I see you have it stopped down, so in reality it's not a slow lens in that sense of the word. Shooting a faster lens is still going to require you to stop it down for proper exposure. The fastest lens I use on mine is an f/4 or slower. The images look pretty clean. Like others have said, I believe if you spent more time with it and discovered what it can do, you would love it. Again, neither here nor there. I hope you find what you're looking for in the 1Dx. That too is an amazing body. I had the opportunity to spend a week with one. I doubt you will have any trouble selling the 1DV, and finding a 1Dx. At the end of the day you have to be comfortable with your gear and trust it to produce the quality you expect from it.

Don't you dare to patronize me. I don't need your advice to read through the thread, you need read through 1DIV info instead.
I gave you the hint, but I am not going to google it for you. I am not going to do the leg work for you either.

If you want to shell out additional $$$ on a 1Dx - go ahead, but something tells me we will be reading similar posts in the 1Dx thread from you.

Good luck.

By slow I did not mean Aperture. I meant tracking speed. I rarely shoot f4 because it's soft, Always shoot f4.5 - f11. My issues are with the Camera's ability to Track a Subject to which the 300mm f4L does not do a very good job. I have to set -4 Micro Adjust for One Shot and -16 for Tracking and I cannot quickly change that, It's frustrating but I also tested my 50mm STM and it's better but still struggles. I had a 7D Mark II for a month and loved it. Never put the 300mm f4L on it but my success rate was almost 100%. I never had a camera that accurate coming from a 6D and 70D. Now that I have the 1D IV it's very good but the 7D Mark II aka 1dx AF is in another league. I put the 1D IV up for sale not intentionally wanting to sell it but if I can get the price that I listed it for. I have no problem letting it go. I am getting the 1DX not just for the better AF and Image Quality but also because whether I keep the 1D IV or not, I am getting the same setup Financially. My intention is to have the 17-40L, 50 STM, 70-200 IS II, 300 f4L and with the 1D IV I can get those lenses brand new, But why do that when I can get two lenses used. Save the money and get the 1DX. 300mm f4L is slow at AF but I am managing enough for now till I get a proper Telephoto lens.

Finally got a shot off with the 1Div.
So far I've a total of 60 min's invested into this camera, thus
no opinion yet.
I did try to read the manual at 0400, wanting to set it so only the middle
focus point was active. Alas too early in the morning and not enough time
to meet out the answer....so other than being in AI servo and high speed frame
rate I really don't know the rest :)
