I've got both 7Dii and 1Div, the fancy focus system of the 7Dii rarely comes into
play for what I do. I just keep the center focus point on my target whether I'm using
the 1Div or the 7Dii.

Same here. I only use my 1D4 for aviation photography. Center point it is.
Even for planes in formation flight the center focus point works pretty well.

I've thought about renting/buying the 1DX or 1DXII. But if I only use center focus point,
little of the camera's AF performance will be used. I'm not sure what I'd gain with such
a camera. More FPS for sure.

I might be better off buying a third 1D4

Frank I'll be sticking to the center AF regardless of the AF ability.
But someday I think I'll do what LiquidStone does and let all AF points have a go
and see what happens.
I just have to figure out how to let all of the AF points do their thing.
Kinda sad to have the tech and not a clue on how to use it.
But honestly I try to buy camera bodies based on sensor power and fps. Sensor power
meaning ISO prowess since I live in a crap light environ.

Whilst I will stick to centre point most of the time, with both the 1D4 and the 7D2 I will use any of the focus points on slow moving/ stationary subjects for compositional purposes.

I also combine spot metering on the 1D4 with single point focus - being limited to only 19 of the 45 points is no real disadvantage... Actually allows faster movement between focus points.

I do also have the ae-lock button on the 1D4 and the DOF preview button on the 7D2 set up as 'all point' as a 'grab something/anything' for when fast/erratic moving things pop up overhead out of nowhere, or for trying to track things like terms or swallows!

Do need a lot more practice at the latter, especially with the 300 + 2x combo!!

sadly I never figured out that. I would love to have that 'hail Mary' set up but would need
an exact play by play button by button instruction guide. I never found one on youtube.
Seems it would be fantastic for when an animal 'explodes' into action.
For the 7Dii I would love it to be on the DOF preview button...seems that would be idea for
me and the hail Mary.

On a 1DMkIV you can use the '*' button to load temporary an almost complete different setup. I use it to switch from full manual (moving birds), single focus point and metering to AV with auto ISO amongst other setting which i cannot recall right now.

I got the idea and the "know how" from "Jim Neiger". Google his name and you should be able to find it.

I'll pass. If I was plying photography as a trade maybe, but as an amateur just relaxing and having fun
and at my age there is no point really.
Someday I'll hopefully end up side by side with a 1Div shooter who can actually show me the step by menu steps.
Until then I'll plod along

MM, given we are on different sides of the planet and ending up side by side probably won't happen, here is the best I can offer.

If you watch this video it will show you how to set up the hail mary shutter speed, ISO, aperture, exposure mode, metering mode etc

and then if you combine that with the following it will get you the 45 point auto focus thrown in too :-

In the same manner, it's also possible to use the AE Lock button to switch to a registered autofocus point while held down, using Custom Function III-11. The AF point is registered by first selecting it (or selecting automatic selection, if you want to register this), then pressing the ISO button while holding down the AF Point Selection button. Both functions can be used together, so that a single press-and-hold of AE Lock can recall the shooting mode, metering mode, exposure level, and focus point, then perform an AF operation.

Hope that makes sense.

I'll dig out the 7D2 DOF button stuff too for you when I find it.

Here it is, step by step:

PART ONE. C.Fn I # 14:

- Mount your fastest aperture lens, f/2 or f/1.8 (don't worry about your long lens, it's wide open aperture we need)

- Set your camera to AV, and the aperture to wide open.

- Go into menu, Custom Functions, CFN I (exposure) #14

- Press the set button, turn rear wheel to highlight "Register" press "set"

- Select the top option "With AE Lock Button (AF ON) " press set.

Now whenever you press the * button, the camera will go to AV mode, wide open on any lens mounted, and begin to AF.

Step 2: Set * AE Lock to activate registered AF POINT

- Menu, Custom Functions C.Fn III (Autofocus/Drive) #11 "Switch to registerd AF Point"
- Press set, scroll with rear wheel to " 2: Only while <*> is pressed "

Now when ever you press and hold the * button, camera will go to AV, open aperture to wide open, and start auto focusing with the registered AF point.

STEP 3: Set "Ring of fire" or "Hail Mary" as your "registered AF point"

-Hold camera up to your face so you are looking through the viewfinder.

- Press the AF Mode selection button (last thumb button on right, past *, it's also the + magnification button. Your current AF selected AF point should light up. Now use the main dial (shutter button finger dial) or joystick to scroll to the outer edge of the AF points until the entire ring lights up in an oval, or "ring of fire".

- Once the "ring of Fire is lit up, press and hold both the +(AF selection/Magnificatio​n button with your thumb, and the ISO button with your shutter finger and hold. The camera will NOT let you know you did anything right

BUT! You have just registered All 45 AF points or "ring of fire" as your "registered" AF point.

Now when ever you press and hold the * button, camera will go to AV, open aperture to wide open, and start auto focusing with the registered AF point, AND your registered AF point is RING OF FIRE


Testing:

Now, pick up your camera, press the center of the joystick to select the center AF point.
Set camera to Manual exposure, set a stopped down aperture (say f/11) Set a shutter speed.

Now looking through the viewfinder, use the AF ON button, and notice, you have your manual exposure set, your stopped down f/11 is set, and whatever shutter speed you set.

Point it at a few things and test this out.

NOW > Move your thumb from [AF ON] to * and press! Your camera will suddenly set aperture to wide open, you will be in AV, and instead of the one center AF point you will be in ring of fire! Move your thumb back to [AF ON] and you are back in manual, stopped down to f/11 etc.

THAT IS THE HAIL MARY SET UP.
