-=1D Mark IV Owners Thread! (it's time)

Jake I am 99.99 percent there=finally! But one little remaining question.
When I go to '*' I am indeed now in Ring of Fire mode/AV/and in my case F1.4........as long as I keep the '*' button
held down.
When I release the '*' button I go back into whatever I had AF-On set to....correct?
Regardless your last set of instructions did it! an I like the results.
Baby exacting steps did it

Now tell me the 1DXii can do this when it gets here.
Better yet how to get all af points active on the 7Dii with the DOF preview button.

Well it certainly was that last set of written instructions Jake typed out.
I did watch the video but I still needed the every little key press to pull it off.
So this afternoon after waking up I had to go out and give it a go.
It was an OMG moment, and in where the heck have I been!
So tribute and huge thanks to all who tried.

I must try this I did set up my 1DMk4 settings when Jake previously suggested the Ring of Fire
but then went and shot a group shot of Cyclist ( Tour Down Under) .
I found it difficult to understand and when a group of Cyclist went past I always got one rider pin sharp
but there was no focus square lighting up so I felt it was a lottery.
With Birds in flight the camera will lock on to the bird as there is no other point to focus on Duh
I get that now.
Example:First shot I was happy with the second I was wanting the green edge rider be in focus,I have had favourable comments on the shots but I was not happy with them
right settings wrong application.

Bazz, remember I have limited knowledge of AF in general.....historical​ly I use center point for my AF needs.
But I think you are right in the hawk I captured today there was nothing else for the camera to focus on, e.g.
a blank sky is idea BUT I got a whole series of his flight and even when he went into tree cover I kept the lens
on him and even in the dense leaves/limbs I still have a hawk in focus. So maybe at least for birds it matters
that you have already gotten focus point on him early on in the flight.
Also he was sitting in dense cover when I began the sequence and took off and a moment later was in blue sky--initiallly
when in the limb/leaf cover I was using AF-ON with my tried and true single point.
It was when he was in the open that I decided to slide my thumb over and engage the ROF.
Got back home, looked on the PC and was ecstatic.

Here it is, step by step:

PART ONE. C.Fn I # 14:

- Mount your fastest aperture lens, f/2 or f/1.8 (don't worry about your long lens, it's wide open aperture we need)

- Set your camera to AV, and the aperture to wide open.

- Go into menu, Custom Functions, CFN I (exposure) #14

- Press the set button, turn rear wheel to highlight "Register" press "set"

- Select the top option "With AE Lock Button (AF ON) " press set.

Now whenever you press the * button, the camera will go to AV mode, wide open on any lens mounted, and begin to AF.

Step 2: Set * AE Lock to activate registered AF POINT

- Menu, Custom Functions C.Fn III (Autofocus/Drive) #11 "Switch to registerd AF Point"
- Press set, scroll with rear wheel to " 2: Only while <*> is pressed "

Now when ever you press and hold the * button, camera will go to AV, open aperture to wide open, and start auto focusing with the registered AF point.

STEP 3: Set "Ring of fire" or "Hail Mary" as your "registered AF point"

-Hold camera up to your face so you are looking through the viewfinder.

- Press the AF Mode selection button (last thumb button on right, past *, it's also the + magnification button. Your current AF selected AF point should light up. Now use the main dial (shutter button finger dial) or joystick to scroll to the outer edge of the AF points until the entire ring lights up in an oval, or "ring of fire".

- Once the "ring of Fire is lit up, press and hold both the +(AF selection/Magnificatio​n button with your thumb, and the ISO button with your shutter finger and hold. The camera will NOT let you know you did anything right

BUT! You have just registered All 45 AF points or "ring of fire" as your "registered" AF point.

Now when ever you press and hold the * button, camera will go to AV, open aperture to wide open, and start auto focusing with the registered AF point, AND your registered AF point is RING OF FIRE

Testing:

Now, pick up your camera, press the center of the joystick to select the center AF point.
Set camera to Manual exposure, set a stopped down aperture (say f/11) Set a shutter speed.

Now looking through the viewfinder, use the AF ON button, and notice, you have your manual exposure set, your stopped down f/11 is set, and whatever shutter speed you set.

Pint it at a few things and test this out.

NOW > Move your thumb from [AF ON] to * and press! Your camera will suddenly set aperture to wide open, you will be in AV, and instead of the one center AF point you will be in ring of fire! Move your thumb back to [AF ON] and you are back in manual, stopped down to f/11 etc.

THAT IS THE HAIL MARY SET UP.

This is great Jake! Now I want to try this similar method to my 1Dx, or does anyone know the Hail Mary setup for 1Dx?

I'll be asking the same thing in a few weeks about the 1DXii.
Currently I'm scouring the net for how to do this on the 7Dii with the DOF preview button.

That,s amazing I will be trying this when Time permits and stick with it until I get my head around the different modes.

'until I get my head around the different modes' well obviously I've never been able to get there by myself and I've been through a number of EOS bodies
and currently have 5 at the house...in fact I was studying focus modes on the 70D just this evening. I'll never get there, and that's quite OK as long as I
keep trying.
I will say this about the 1Div, post Jake's instructions and nailing the hawk I've just become even more enamored with this body.
